As the nation celebrates Workers' Day today on Friday (01/05/2026), the Federation Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) is ready for the day. FEDUSA will host its Workers' Day in Mpumalanga and Gauteng plus Free State. Meanwhile Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), is turning the spotlight back to the site of the 2012 Marikana massacre. AMCU is using the public holiday to renew calls for the day to be moved to August 16th. And the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union(POPCRU), is urging members to turn out in full support ofCOSATU rallies nationwide. These statements and actions from federation unions, come amid mounting pressure on workers, with rising living costs, austerity measures and ongoing challenges within the criminal justice system. The unions are concerned about issues such as chronic under staffing, unsafe working conditions, and deteriorating infrastructure highlight that the struggle for worker dignity is far from over.
