One in three Australian boys reportedly believe gender equality has gone too far. And this week, New sexual assault allegations involving elite private schoolboys and AFL players have again put misogyny in the spotlight.

Taken together, they raise a difficult question: When do common sexist schoolyard slurs turn into violent crimes against women? 

Dr Sara Meger, a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Melbourne, has been researching the links between misogyny and violent extremism.

Her research found hostile attitudes towards women were a stronger indicator of extremist views than factors like politics, religion, race or time spent online.
