Municipal Watch: With local government elections drawing closer, lawmakers in parliament are discussing the Coalitions Bill and whether they can have it ready just in time for the November 4th polls. Chairperson of the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Committee, Dr Zweli Mkhize, says that they would need to fast-track the legislation, which is critical in regulating coalitions and ensuring political stability in municipalities.

The City of Johannesburg has settled its outstanding electricity debt to Eskom in full, paying more than R5.25 billion following months of disputes and intervention by the national government. The settlement means Eskom has withdrawn the PAJA process it had initiated over the arrears.
