In April 2025, a group of women carried a coffin to the Union Buildings, covered in 5,578 hand-woven beads, one for every woman murdered in a single year in this country. They delivered a memorandum backed by over 150,000 signatures. Today, more than a million South Africans have signed that petition, government has declared gender-based violence and femicide a national disaster and a statutory National Council has been established and held its first meeting.

Yet nine women have been found murdered across Ekurhuleni since July, and women across South Africa are still asking themselves the same terrifying question. Am I next?

The declarations have been made. The council has met. The signatures have been delivered. So why is it still not enough? Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka "Steve" Letsike, joins the show to answer the question that over a million South Africans are demanding an answer to. What is government actually doing, why is it proving insufficient and what will it take to make South African women feel safe in their own country?

South Africa is once again confronting a devastating reality for women, with nine women reportedly killed in a deeply troubling period that demands urgent action and honest conversation. Today's show goes beyond the statistics and focuses on what every woman can practically do to protect herself, create an opportunity to escape danger and move through the world with greater confidence and awareness.

Joining the show is Shihan Masedisa "Mas" Mojaki, a Katlehong-born martial artist with more than 25 years of karate experience, 195 trophies and medals to her name and the historic distinction of being the first African woman to attain the Shihan Godan 5th Dan rank. Founder of Mas sê Dojo, trainer of students at the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf, champion of women through her Nothing But Woman platform, and a karateka, MC, biker, events organiser and humanitarian all in one, Shihan Mas brings both the expertise and the heart this conversation requires. From practical self-defence techniques to situational awareness, prevention and knowing how to respond when confronted by a threat, this is the kind of conversation that could save a life.
