In April this year,  Dignity South Africa filed papers in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to challenge the current law that makes it a crime to assist a person in ending their life, no matter the circumstances. The application is basically asking the court to declare the current blanket common-law prohibition unconstitutional, unlawful and invalid. Dignity South Africa, an organisation that advocates for end-of-life care, says that while the process is expected to take some time, this is the first step in legalising Medical Assistance in Dying in the country.
