Dr Mbongeni Ngema: This Is My Story is a deeply personal documentary that opens the curtain on the life of one of South Africa’s most celebrated creative minds. Told in his own words, the film takes viewers through Dr Ngema’s artistic journey, from Woza Albert and Asinamali to the global sensation Sarafina. With rare archival footage and interviews featuring the voices of OR Tambo, Nelson Mandela, Quincy Jones and Leleti Khumalo, the film reflects on what shaped Ngema’s work and the political and cultural waves he moved through.
The documentary was produced by Lindani Mbense, a Pietermaritzburg-born journalist and filmmaker, who began work on the film in 2020 and completed it after Dr Ngema’s passing. It is already drawing attention, with a nomination at the 2025 Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards. He joins us instudio
