The Wings for Life World Run is set to return on May 4, 2025, bringing together runners and wheelchair participants from across the globe for its 12th edition taking place in South Africa; Cape Town, and Centurion. This one-of-a-kind race has no traditional finish line; instead, participants are challenged to outrun a Virtual Catcher Car, which gradually increases its pace.

Inclusive by design, the event welcomes wheelchair participants using everyday wheelchairs, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate. With 100% of entry fees and donations going directly to spinal cord research, this is more than a race, it’s a chance to make a real difference in the lives of those impacted by spinal cord injuries.

As the country observes World AIDS Day, it is both a moment to reflect on achievements and a call to action for eradicating the epidemic through continued innovation and commitment. With an estimated 12.7% of South Africa's population living with HIV, significant progress continues to be made in addressing the epidemic. Advances in treatment, preventive strategies and public education have played a crucial role in supporting the 8.45 million people living with the virus while also helping to curb transmission rates. Despite these successes, challenges persist, particularly for vulnerable groups like expectant mothers, where maternal mortality remains a pressing concern.

Barriers such as late presentation for care, stigma, and limited resources continue to hinder progress. The fear of discrimination often discourages individuals from disclosing their HIV status, restricting their access to essential healthcare and emotional support. We are joined by Dr. Fulufhelo Tshivhula, an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Mediclinic Limpopo, to highlights the importance of early detection and access to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)

With alcohol consumption expected to rise during this time of year, safeguarding communities from preventable accidents becomes more critical than ever.

ALCO-Safe calls for solutions that go beyond awareness campaigns but should rather implement tangible, proactive measures to tackle this crisis effectively such as regularly deployed breathalyser checkpoints and rigorous alcohol testing which have been proven as deterrents that can keep intoxicated drivers off the roads. By investing in these strategies and prioritizing road safety, we can shift from reactive responses to preventive action, significantly reducing the risk of fatalities.
