As the country observes World AIDS Day, it is both a moment to reflect on achievements and a call to action for eradicating the epidemic through continued innovation and commitment. With an estimated 12.7% of South Africa's population living with HIV, significant progress continues to be made in addressing the epidemic. Advances in treatment, preventive strategies and public education have played a crucial role in supporting the 8.45 million people living with the virus while also helping to curb transmission rates. Despite these successes, challenges persist, particularly for vulnerable groups like expectant mothers, where maternal mortality remains a pressing concern.

Barriers such as late presentation for care, stigma, and limited resources continue to hinder progress. The fear of discrimination often discourages individuals from disclosing their HIV status, restricting their access to essential healthcare and emotional support.
