Whether you’ve got some pipes or sing off key, butcher lyrics or a connoisseur of lyrics, karaoke nights have long stopped being associated with only the Asian culture. The growth of karaoke bars in Africa reflects not only the continent's embrace of global trends but also its unique blend of local flavour and international influence. From Cairo to Cape Town, Nairobi to Lagos, karaoke bars have become hubs of social interaction, where people gather to unleash their inner performers, forge connections, and celebrate the joy of music.
Co-founded by South African Afrobeats DJ, Spokenpriestess, Gbedu nights is an African karaoke with a DJs spinning sounds of Afrobeats, Afrohouse, Bongo, Dancehall, Kizomba, Kuduro and other genres that Africa and its diaspora have to offer.
Inspired by her deep passion for African music, Spokenpriestess sought to create a platform for Africans to sing karaoke in their mother tongues, which is hardly practiced.
