From K-Pop to K-Food, South Africa’s appetite for Korean cuisine grows

The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, better known as KOTRA, is set to launch the K-Food Accelerator Competition, calling on local business owners, importers, distributors, and creative minds to help bring the best of Korean cuisine to South African tables. The deadline is 30 April 2025 with business funding up for grabs and cash prizes of up to R50,000 for the top three ideas to make K-Food a household name.

Why is K-Food the next big thing in South Africa? For starters, it ticks all the boxes: health-conscious, culturally trending, and wildly diverse. Thanks to the global wave of K-pop and K-dramas, South Africans are hungry for more Korean experiences and that includes what’s on their plates.
