South Africa’s beer industry is doing more than filling glasses, it’s putting food on the table. According to a new study by Oxford Economics, the sector added over R96 billion to the country’s GDP in 2023, paid R56.5 billion in tax revenue and supported more than 200,000 jobs.
Commissioned by the World Brewing Alliance, the report highlights how beer production fuels local economies especially in developing countries like South Africa, where the impact is particularly significant. Despite a drop in job numbers over the past few years, largely due to automation and market pressures, the industry’s economic contribution continues to rise.
