As we commemorate #WomensMonth, we kicked off a series of conversations with women across various sectors in the workplace. We wanted to unpack some of the challenges, triumphs, and opportunities that exist to advance equality in the workplace. We also explored what empowerment looks like for the next generation by speaking to captains of industries at the 30 year milestone and have them share their reflections.
While we see many women climb the corporate ladder to leadership, many women have expressed that they are still not seen or heard as leaders in the workplace. There are also concerns around clearing the obstacles to access male-dominated industries, seeing #WomensMonth as a corporate social responsibility project rather than a meaningful process outside of August, access to funding for expansion and advancing equal pay for equal work particularly as more households (42%) are being led by women in South Africa (UN-WIED: 2018- 2022).
