Unions take on yesterday's Budget speech

View descriptionShare

We use this hour now to reflect on yesterday's Medium-Term Budget through the eyes of trade unions. At the rate the cost of living is rising on a daily basis, one wonders if there's really anything that we as workers are benefitting from it. One of the issues also on the table was talk of making the R370-a-month social grant permanent or replacing it with a Basic Income Grant. For some time now, it has repeated its previous saying that a permanent grant must be supported by higher revenue sources. Is our social grant system sustainable seeing how many people are being retrenched?
