Focus: In the past two weeks, we have seen a new era in our election culture as talks of a coalition government among political parties were underway as the voting results did not find any party received more than 50% nationally. According to the law, a new government must be formed within 14 days and the first sitting of Parliament had to elect the President. In this period, we have seen new political formations emerge outside of the goverment of national unity (“black progressives”), seen legal action to interdict the first sitting of Parliament and a new party did not get sworn as members of Parliament. We have also seen resistance from members of the ANC against the GNU and tripartheid alliance partners, with some protesting.
