South Africa's energy transition, where are we?

View descriptionShare

As a country we have been so occupied by what’s happening in our political sphere that we forgot another burning issue of our energy transition. An article published in the MyBroadband website in May reminds us that South Africa is expected to propose a timeline for the shutdown of coal-fired power plants in a bid to secure about $2.5 billion in climate finance. If you may remember that under the agreement which was first announced in 2021, our country is said to receive assistance under certain conditions, one being that it cuts its dependence on coal, which accounts for four-fifths of the nation’s electricity output.
