He called us from outside the NSFAS offices in Cape Town demanding outstanding payments for students they are accommodating. At first they were denied entry, then when the Talking Point team intervened, the officials then met with them leading to a happy ending.

Sustainability is a challenge facing small-scale farmers and it impacts the business of agriculture at several levels: profitability as the cost of seed to export increases with inflation. One may have to consider whether to diversify the output of your product (think sugarcane and their by-products, for example). One also has to consider whether to introduce alternative farming methods where there is a lack of resources or basic infrastructure. Finally, how to adapt to climate change events   which extends the production period and makes communities food insecure.

As part of a series of discussions, we unpack the state of our agricultural sector with a focus on the 2 million small-scale farmers that are in operation. Today, we will address some of the issues raised around sustainability of these holdings and what are some of the solutions that can be shared in building a more expansive small-scale farming landscape.

Our next guest hails from the streets of the West Rand, Johannesburg and started her musical journey at the age of 12 after her father introduced her to jazz by making her listen to the album: “Ladies Sing Jazz”. For her, the fluidity of jazz as a genre gives her the opportunity to share her influences and fully express who she wants to be at that moment.

Before going solo, she was the lead singer of the popular band: Unity Band that has captured the hearts of many avid jazz fans. She has worked alongside Sisonke Xonti, Kurt Bowers, Lonwabo Mafani, Stephen de Sousa, Marco Maritz and many more to build the sound for her debut EP: Umnikelo.

In recent months, we have seen athletes across the country working towards qualification for the Olympic Games.As we mark 14 days to the global showpiece, we thought that we could take a moment before the Olympic Games to speak to some of our sporting heroes that will go represent us in Paris. We wanted to understand what goes into preparing for an Olympic event, the resolve to bounce back after injury, the moment of achieving the dream & how they use their role in society to inspire a new generation of athletes in their field.

Our next guest hails from Durban where his love for water started at the age of eight and has gone from humble beginnings at Seagulls Swimming Club to becoming a 4x Olympic Medalist. He is one of South Africa’s most decorated Olympians and has dominated international swimming over the last three decades (2000s; 2010s & 2020s). He has been described by World Aquatics as “the ultimate competitor”. He is the man that stunned the world when he beat US Swimmer and hero, Michael Phelps at the 2012 London Olympics.
