Members of the  Treatment Action Campaign and people living with HIV/AIDS were picketing outside the Sisa Dukashe stadium in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape where Deputy President Paul Mashatile delivered the keynote address on World Aids Day. They are calling on Mashatile who is also the Chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council to implement a six-month supply of antiretroviral for people who are stable on HIV treatment. They say that currently, antiretroviral treatment is supplied for only two months, causing congestion at local clinics.  Let's use this opportunity now to talk about where we are as a country in dealing with HIV and Aids and also where are the major challenges? Professor Srila Roy is a professor of Sociology at Wits University and she joins us this morning to talk about the status of women and children in South Africa. You may be aware that we are now in the period of 16 Days of activism against the abuse of women and children also we are coming to the end of Children’s Month. Not so long ago, the Human Sciences Research Council  released a shocking report that revealed an increasing pattern of gender-based violence against women aged 18 to 24, perpetrated by men with whom they are not romantically involved. Almost every day in the news bulletin, there’s a story about a child harmed or woman killed, what does it say about our country? Professor Roy joins us to share her views and also the work she does at Wits….

Miyelani Holeni our regular expert on issues pertaining to municipalities joins us for the last time for 2024 taking a look at legislation governing local government. In August this year, Auditor General Tsakani Maluleke revealed that only 34 of South Africa’s 257 municipalities have obtained clean bills of health. Not much has changed regarding legislation, but the ministry governing municipalities is now in the hands of the IFP under the Government of National Unity. The province of KwaZulu-Natal on the other hand is looking at bringing traditional leaders into municipalities for them to have a say in an effort to improve service delivery. As far as our guest is concerned, which legislation would he say should be improved and what will it take seeing how badly municipalities are still run?
