#AfricaMonth: New International Scramble for Africa and the Challenges of Unity in 2024

View descriptionShare

In recent months, many experts have warned of a new international scramble for Africa that is emerging as global players seek to establish influence over key decision-makers. This comes at a time where 17 African member states are voting for new leaders in national ballots this year. Some academics are cautiously optimistic stating that the new scramble may presents opportunities for African nations to leverage external interest for their own benefit. If approached strategically, partnerships with global powers could result in technology transfer, infrastructure development, education and increased investment.

In the build-up to #AfricaDay2024, the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs is holding its annual lecture this weekend under the theme: “New International Scramble for Africa and the challenges of unity in 2024” and our next guest reflects on the position of the continent as well as what lessons can be taken forward by the next generation of leaders who must tackle these challenges facing this predominately young continent.

Guest: Prof. Abdoulaye Bathily - former Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
