Here comes the cavalry, Governor Newsom is sending dozens of Highway Patrol officers to Oakland. It’s a “law enforcement surge,” requested by embattled Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao.

This is not the first time the CHP has come riding to Oakland’s rescue, the governor has sent in extra officers before, but never at this scale. Newsom says 120 CHP will come to assist the Oakland Police department, armed with Automatic License Plate reader cameras, canine units and air support in the form of helicopters. They will try to deter and respond to car break-ins, auto theft, retail crime, violent crime and basically anything they can prevent or spot in progress.

For more, KCBS Radio's Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising spoke with Doug Sovern, KCBS political reporter.
