Today, we're learning about a new effort to build wildlife crossings across California.

Working with Governor Newsom, a group of state agencies and nonprofits are developing a statewide plan for wildlife connectivity, allowing wildlife to pass major freeways and roads danger free. It's called "California Wildlife Reconnected."

A controversial plan to protect the threatened California Northern Spotted Owl is official, and that means 450,000 Barred Owls in the West Coast will be killed over the next three decades. 

While opponents believe this strategy is cruel, scientists insist it's the most effective way to not only protect the Northern Spotted Owl population, but also the forest ecosystems where the threatened bird evolved.

But a new study is looking into how this vicious cycle of post-fire erosion is ramping up across Northern California and causing a significant amount of soil loss, which not only spells trouble for homes and roads, but also our reservoirs.
