On this episode of My Money Is Safe, Greg Elie and Patti Jaynes focus on long-term care as “catastrophic insurance” most retirees lack, citing that about 70% of people turning 65 will need some form of paid or unpaid care, with typical stays of 2.5 years for men and 3.5 years for women and annual costs now often $66,000–$80,000 for home health or assisted living and $112,000–$130,000 or more for nursing-home care.

They stress that Medicare covers little custodial care, Medicaid generally requires near-poverty assets, and traditional long-term-care policies are use-it-or-lose-it, while family caregiving can exhaust both money and the caregiver’s health. Solutions they describe include annuity-style accounts with income “doublers” that can temporarily double guaranteed lifetime payouts for care needs, hybrid products that turn a lump sum into both cash value and larger long-term-care and death-benefit pools, and their PSLIP (Properly Structured Life Insurance Plan), which can provide living-benefit access to the death benefit for care while remaining a win-win if unused.
