'Good Morning Football' Hosts Peter Schrager & Kyle Brandt Discuss the 2024 Jets (8/13)

Published Aug 13, 2024, 11:30 AM
Host Eric Allen is joined in the Audi Performance Studio by "Good Morning Football" hosts Peter Schrager and Kyle Brandt for a discussion about their visit to see the 2024 Jets during training camp and what their expectations are for the Green & White in the regular season.

Gentlemen, thank you so much for coming up to the studio.

You have a fish story from today's visit to one Jets.

Oh the fish story. Yeah, fish story, not not the insufferable band Phi s h not like we're talking about.

And the sphere for four days when it's for twenty.

Broilly Joel's house. Fish story fish where someone catches a fish and they continue to brag about how big it gets over the years. Our fish story is we walk out to practice this incredible day here at the Jets facility and it's there's music pumping, there's optimism, it's August, and within ten seconds of setting up in the shade and respectful distance away, this ball football comes creating like bounces right at our feet. We looked up in number eight for the for the New York Jets had thrown it in our direction mockingly. That's kind of mess with us a little bit. We've known Aaron long time from a distance and interviewing the stuff. So I pick up the ball and I'm like, all right, truth, what would you do somebody like that? If they messed with you, they're waiting for you.

You're on the spot, because that's what happens throughout training camp. When you're on the practice field and that ball comes to you, you could take the soft way, which is the underhand.

Underhand, or walk it to somebody.

Yes, everybody's watching you in that moment, or are you going to deliver?

What did you do?

Mom? Spaghetti? You know this is eight mile? No listen, I had about a thirty yard distance. This was no check down, this was no screen path. It was a thirty yard distance. I went for it. I said, I'm gonna throw it hard, the only way how to do it? Great spiral, great, very spiral. Not terribly accurate. He bailed me out a little bit made it.

Oh heught.

Rogers caught it.

He caught it in the air.

So you're one for one on your tempter.

Isn't an incomplete pass that bounce Kyle's way. Rodgers threw the ball at us like us like throws it so they never all eyes at the practice, the starters, the defense, they're all watching us, and I'm like, what do we do? And Kyle Kyle looked like Dan Marino. It was a quarterback challenge, and he threw it back and Rogers caught it like he made a great catch.

Though, really good guy.

I was thinking, like, I don't know, is Aaron Rodgers ever caught a pass in the NFL? I don't know if I can't think of one offhand, Like in Green Band, remember some crazy trick play they did.

Robert Sala might pull that up during the team meeting. His coaches have been known to do that before.

That's yeah, I hope, so it was. It was I looked pretty cool. That is my fish story. Well, I'll tell my children. It was sixty yards and it was dead rope on the sideline. That's how the fish story gets bigger. But until then completed pass.

Rogers had like a he had like a little dirty joke at us.

Yeah, yeah, will We can't even repeat that and can't share it.

And I really liked left.

It was off color. We both heard it and we're like, all right.

Yes, it's funny.

It's funny.

All right.

So he's been throwing a lot of no look passes out here? Was it a no look to you?

Go?

It was?

I think he knew where he was going. It's like, you know, he wanted to bust chops. He deliberately one bounced it into us so he didn't hit us. In the high or something while we were talking, and I love that he did. It was hilarious. It's that's his sense of humor. I'll look at those two guys, I know those conical heads for years. See what you're gonna do with it? Now, that's that's him. That's him.

We're one of those guys back our show, Good Morning Football.

As you know, it's one of the only shows that isn't gonna come out out of breath talking about.

Can the drugs win tomorrow?

It's more like, let's how do they beat the bills and the AFC. Let's just have a little fun at training camp.

Rodgers appreciates that we've been on the air for eight years and Aaron has been in the headlines a million different reasons.

And we never take the bait. We never take the low hanging fruit.

We like to talk football and I like to talk about personalities, and he certainly is one.

Yeah, how would you describe his personality quixotic at best?

Well, I would let I would let Sauce describe it. So we talked to Sauce for a while today, twenty three year old Sauce Gardener speaking about forty year old Aaron Rodgers, and I remember there was a moment in Green Bay. There was some story that was written, and the whole point of the story was Rogers makes all these jokes and references to either pop culture or science or whatever that not relatable to the young teammates. I don't know. It wasn't terribly flattering of him. So he said a Sauce like, does he ever like reference Big Lebowski and he is a twenty three ar old guy, I don't know what the hell that is And he was like, no, like not at all. We hang out, we're tight, Like he doesn't make any of that stuff, Like we're really really cool. And so I think Sauce loves him. I really do.

He's like he's got swag, so like the way he walks around, he's got swagger, so like, you know, he's he's cool, but he also treats them like adults and mature, and to me, his personality, I want. We're in the business of covering the game, obviously, and there are people on our network who can break down a better you know, zone blitz than me, And there are people who can talk about, you know, why this offensive scheme is better, and that's that's I didn't play the game.

It's like the too high safety, the two high.

Safety, Like there's there's an audience for that, and they're like literally three high school coaches somewhere who watch that and like that. But for us, it's we like personalities, content and stuff that we can have with a little bit of color, and Rogers never ceases to deliver that. And oh, by the way, he's one of the most gifted throws of the football all time. Kyle believes he is the greatest throw of the football ball.

I get it. I get crap for that. Sometimes I want I say, because I say, Rogers the best I've ever seen. I've never seen a quarterback play the position better Brady Brady Brady. Like, listen, it's not about Brady. I really distinguished between the greatest, which encompasses accomplishments and breath of your longevity and all that fine, and of course that's Brady, but the best, like on a given day in a given season, like I've never seen someone master the position like Rogers. The best I've ever seen Rogers.

In Dallas in that playoff game where he hits the Jared Cook on the sideline.

And like the role left, there's no one better.

Like Mahomes has got his moments in the Wasp and all that, but like when Rogers is at his all time best, there's no prettier ball and there's no one more dialed in.

We're like, oh, he's gonna he's gonna gut us today.

And if you're a Jets fan and we're doing this in August, like it's coming, like he's gonna do it this year for you and it's gonna be the most amazing thing.

Are you guys gonna be staying in New York throughout the regular season?

Yeah?

Yeah?

How many Jets games are you going to come out?

It actually opens the door for.

Us to do that.

Well.

Listen, the last Jets game I attended was Jets at home versus the Bills. I mean it was like, so it was a Jets win, but you know it was solid running on the Bills. But I'm not afraid to love again, and I don't think the Jets should be. We've talked about that a lot in this preseason. Peter speaks to it a lot. In this region. The fear to let yourself.

Call last year was everyone went all in and rightfully so and then you have your heart broken? Are you allowed to love again? Like, are you allowed to like jump right into a new relationship with this team because it's a different year and it's a different team, and I think flat out there a better team on paper. You know, they beefed up the offensive line with Moses and Smith, and of course the draft with Olu, and then their defensive a year older. Those guys are like full bloom amazing and then you Aaron Rodgers, so there are going to be better than they were last year.

But are you allowed to love again? Are you allowed to buy into it?

Of course, we're in the business of hyping everybody up, and we want that in August.

But like, if you're a Jets fan, are you so coarsened? Are you so scarred that you won't even let yourself believe?

Yeah?

I hear the word curse a couple of times.

I don't.

I don't buy that either.

I asked you, like, you're an adult, and you believe that you believe where we were, that's nonsense. And now you know why I was gout to say that, because right now, one of the best teams in the entire NFL by far, are the Detroit Lions. The Detroit Lions are like Super Bowl favorites, and they've had it way worse than the Jets over the last thirty years, like not even close. The Jets have had some highs in that time, the lines have been pretty much nothing. And the fact that they can be that good and that beloved and that well built and that fast and dynamic, don't tell me anybody's cursed. If the Lions are that good, nobody's cursed.

Now.

The last Jets game that I went to was that Black Friday Nightmare.

Oh I forgot I went to that too. Oh man, I forgot that yards.

Yeah this sucks, but that's a bad way down the half.

Yeah, oh this sucked.

It was terrible, And like that's you know, Jets fans like, no, I don't want to relive that.

I want to just like just take it as it comes.

But like I grew up in Jersey, all my friends and Jet fans, and it's like there's this last year they were all in this year, there's this hesitation to believe, and I'm like, I understand that it's because you've been burned. And it's like any lover who's been hurting a romance. You don't want to jump right back into the next one.

But like it. It was humming today.

Yeah, there's a lot to love out there, right.

Yes, Yeah, Like I have objective eyes. I look at thirty two teams. I'm like, that's one of the better ones.

Yeah, And that's the point.

Aaron Rodgers said that every year there's probably eight to twelve teams that legitimately can say we can compete for a championship. And you guys are down right here. You watch them today, Jets are in that mex right.

Well, you know what, we had a great experience today with with Quincy Williams, who I think today Peter and I collectively fell in love with him. We watched them from Afar, but got to sit with him. He's just so cool and so and so humble and just so fun. He's the highest rated Jet on the NFL's top number thirty two. Make what you want of that list. That's fine. Not Quinnin Williams, not Sauce, not Garrett, not rod We could keep going. That's how many guys they have. Like you go to a team when he is.

Going number two overall in fantasy football draft. Yeah, he's like he's.

The seventh guy. You go to his trade camps. Who are the cup two or three guys on the team, Like, who are the dogs? The guys, the stars whatever they have like seven or eight.

Stars behind this, and like you know we're coming to one day, We're gonna come to Jets camp, NFL Network.

We come in, we think we're hot, hot shit. Whatever we come in. We're like, we'll take We'll take Rogers.

We'll take Rogers, We'll take Sala, We'll get Garrett, like give us breeze, Like we'll take all your And the PR guys were like, well, the.

Offense has meetings.

We're gonna give you guys Solomon, Thomas, Quincy Williams and.

Sauce guard I me and are like awesome, great, great.

And on another team you're like, well I don't want the second year guy that no one knows, and you guys are trying to like can we have the quarterback. We had no complaints because we knew those guys are good enough in their household names and they were awesome on the show.

What do you think of your visit with Sauce Garden.

It's awesome, you know, it's so it's you think his name is literally sauce. He comes out, he's got the diamond teeth or whatever the hell, twenty three years old, and then he's this like old soul personality and he speaks to you like, I like, I feel like someone in my age, like that's in their forties with the kids. And he is so calm and down to earth. I think you expect some sort of like rock star and like ostentatious over the top. It's not at all. He wants to talk about golf. He literally says, I'm not one of these Hollywood celebrities. I want to stay home and interact with people. And then Peter told this story of how he spent his off.

Season's crazy that he like, you know, this is a guy who's twenty three years old, he's got millions in the bank, he's a you know, huge contract home contract.

And he's where is he spending his offices.

He's living in Florham Park, I know, and he's and he's here in this building when his you know, colleagues in the NFL are in Miami at One Oak or whatever the club is now. You know, they're in La at Delilah and they're out, you know, overseas.

You're Mikonos in there, you know.

Sauce seems like a homebody. Yeah, he says he's building.

A house in New Jersey.

He loves it here, and like, let'll tell you what, there are better places to be in February. If you don't have to be in New Jersey. You might want to be in Florida, Miami. You might want to be in Sarasota, you might want to be in Scottsdale. Sauce is like, I'm good, and.

Like, I'll pick up golf. That'll be my crazy advice for the summer.

He's not out there, you know, doing some you know wild video at three am on Instagram.

Are you jealous of the way he picked up golf so quick? That's crazy, isn't that sweat? Yeah?

Well he tells the stories, all right. So I got out there and I shot like one hundred or something. I'm like, okay, yeah with you. And then he just kind of figured it out, ye, And he figured it out by asking people on Twitter what he should do. In the middle of the round. As he's standing over his ball, he tweets, hey, I got one hundred and fifty yards to the green and someone will be like, all right, here's what you want to do with your wrist, and then he'll do it. It's it's nuts the fact that he could do that. I would be seven transfusions deep and shooting one hundred and forty for that run.

An incredible natural athlete, and of course he's good right away. It's like you forgot these are world class athletes. And he picks up the club and has a perfect form of.

Why is transfusions? Why are transfusions the golf drink drink?

You have generations like a grandfather drink vodka. No, it's grape juice vodka, and then there's a third ingredient. Is it sprite or something like that.

It's definitely a carbonation.

There's a carbonation, I think, yeah, but I think it's like a grandfather's drink. Like they'll drink an old fashion at the clubhouse, but then they'll drink the transfusion.

Out on the sugar John Daly, which is the Arnold Palmer just spiked with vodka.

Delicious.

It's really good, delicious. Yes, So that's what I go with you.

Is there a local course that the guys from the show and that you guys all work because I know there's great public courses.

Here in Jersey.

So you got a golden tea machine in the But I don't think I don't think Sala is going to the public course. I think he's going to you know, Trump or or one of these playing field or one of these.

So have you had a chance to get on the links with.

Anything or liberty or national I mean, but yeah, there's a lot of good courses around here.

Unfortunately, my game is not.

What you get in the gym, though. I attle bit look like this two years ago in the Look at those shorts, Look at your thighs.

All right, thanks, Oh god, I wanted to talk to you guys about the show. Okay, what do you all have in store for us in twenty twenty four? A lot of new here coming up this season.

Yeah.

Sure.

Well I've always said, like Good Morning Football doesn't like to sit still. Never has. We move studios three times in our first three years. We keep moving. Nate Burlison left the show, we immediately won the Emmy Award for Best Show. Maybe it's a coincidence, Maybe.

It's no problem now CBS.

Yeah, I mean, it doesn't make sense that that would happen like it just happened. Now we moved again. Now we move coasts. Now we're by coastal and everything in between. We never just set up and just do shows year if something always changes, so of course this changed this year. But what doesn't change is like Peter and I have been there since the beginning, and we've had Jamie now for a couple of years, we've had akbar at it's at the loop, and like it's kind of what Peter was talking about earlier. We are not going to do what they call in TV a vo of the cover three of the Bengal versus the Seahawks. We're gonna talk about the personality. We're gonna talk about how much we love the game. We genuinely love football. We're raised on football. And you know what, and this is crazy for a TV show. We love each other too. Peter and I don't scream each other.

For folks, And you know it's It's a good example was today Rogers, they throw the ball over here.

It's very easy to recall.

Me like Kyle couldn't throw the ball and he Kyle threw a nice pass.

I'm like you, buddy.

I would also say with our show.

I still think it's the smartest show on television too, because we live and breathe it every single day and we do a four hour show where.

We talk football.

It's impossible not to just buy osmosis follow the game in a different way. I read everything, Kyle reads everything. I speak to a lot of different coaches, owners, gms. Try to give you the best stuff up to date, but it's not just say I think Kyle's the most creative mind in sports TV. And you pair that with kind of my insights, Jamie's touch, and then Akbar who's our new co host. I think it's a really good show, but it's different this year and that we do two hours on the NFL Network and then we're doing two hours of a show called GMFB Overtime, which is on Roku. But also it's gonna be starting season syndicated on Fox local markets. So like our show randomly is gonna like be on after like Judge Judy or like Kelly Clarkson or something or something like that late morning.

Yeah, like we don't get home from school instead.

Of gonna it's not gonna be the Prices, right, It's gonna be It's gonna be me and Kyle b sing about the Saints backfield. But truly what happened was, I don't know if I'm speaking out of school. The local markets were offered this and it's one hundred and nineteen markets.

I think it was a number of like local.

Markets, and they're like, yeah, we'll take NFL highlights on a show like even if even if it's football, So it's gonna air and syndication, which I have no idea.

How this goes.

That's very cool.

I don't think there's ever been a sports show that just like the first one. Yeah, Like it's like Judge Wapner, It's Judge, j browne Joe Brown, It's Richard Bay, Steve Wilkos, Steve Willco Will Coast, Will cost will Go the band.

You guys know way too much about Morning TV.

I don't know why we're on it.

I don't watch it, but like honestly, like Anchorage, Alaska is gonna have us on on Fox and then like you know whatever, to just.

A reference, Wilco the band, see this is the show. Jeff tweetees you guys if school Germany, I love that song.

You guys have had tremendous success unbelievable rapport. As far as your skits that you've done over the years, how much does that come from you? How much does that come from the producers in the same Hey.

Great question.

Yeah, the same producers that are designing those screens for the ex player to talk about the triple high safeties.

Are not involved in our skits.

I will tell you no, I'm serious that we have a great support staff and we kind of lead the way, and these guys and gallas behind the scenes give us all the bells and whistles.

But you know, sometimes the skits can.

Get a little off color and we go in places that the NFL isn't necessarily thrilled with, and then we rein it back in. But uh, if you know the two of us, we're going to always at least try to push the envelope.

Yeah, when we started in twenty sixteen, we're like, we got to do our own stuff. We've got to be different, and it's gonna know, we gotta come from us, because frankly, I can watch people online. I can watch people in TV studios who were clearly handed a card of things to read about the Bears, whatever it may be, whatever team they're talking about and as well as they may read it and as well as they may sell it, it's inorganic. And it's fine that people I respect it's worked that way and are very successful that way. I'm not able to work that way, and I like to do my own stuff and write my own stuff, and I know Peter does too, and that's just the way we've always done. It's a lot more work, a lot more work, but I think it's better.

Problem.

We have a gift in that we have the NFL films and that archive and all the highlights the ever can have, so like we use that to our advantage and just so happens. The two of us are Encyclopedia's as far as like classic NFL, so we lean into that a lot too. It's fun. It's a fun show. If you don't watch it at home, give it a shot.

It's just an alternative to what you're seeing everywhere else.

What's it like when you guys are in the city doing something on the street, because there are a lot of people who recognize you and say it's.

More that won't Yeah, yeah, right.

New York City's a melting pot.

It's everybody, So there's got to be a lot of people walking by, like what the hell's going on?

Even though it's the city, nobody cares. And that's the beauty of we're screaming like lunatics. We're doing a Wall Street bit where we're yelling out the crowd, we're throwing footballs.

But some guys got to be at the desk at nine am and we're on Wall Street and it's like we're getting to work. I don't give a crap. Hilariously enough, one time we're up there and some gentlemen comes up to us and it's like, fellas, hey, Herry, dude, were about the phone. He's like, I'm Michael.

Badgley, the kicker for the Lion's Dad stand Badger.

He's like, I work over there at d.

Money Badger's dad, and you work at JP. You're just here. Just that's the random.

That's New York.

Yeah, it's like a random guy walks by.

Or Jim Kramer one time just walked into our shot. We're like that.

The actual Jim Kramer is like, go Eagles.

It was awesome.

That's New York.

Did you ask him for any stock advice?

Not today? Checked it down?

Jump it's down today we're taping today.

Peters is still on the Pets dot Com.

Kyle's all in on game stuff.

I am you guys.

You guys have done it your own way throughout your respective careers.

What kind of advice would you.

Give to folks coming up in the business, becauseill like you said, hey, listen, question you said, and you're right, like, you're not gonna watch me, and I'm not breaking down cover too, but you connect with so many personalities throughout this league, whether it be GMS head coach.

There's a modesty in that I come out and I openly say that's not my thing. I didn't play high school football. I didn't pay college football. So I think it's disarming where I come out headed. I'm like, I might be a big guy, but like I do not I did not play football. So I will not tell you a route and I will not tell you a route tree, but I'll tell you the backstory of your team's offensive line coach and why he's so important to his team. But my advice, and I think Kyle and I would have different advices. My advice is to just do it because so often there's barriers of entry. He was like, well, I sent my resumes to like, you got YouTube, Instagram, you've got Twitter, Like just do it and then figure it out.

For a bit.

Yeah, shoot your shot. Yeah. Years ago, I was starting a new show for Spotify, and interview based show, and I did direct message Aaron Rodgers and I just asked him if he would come on. And I didn't have a relationship with him, I really didn't. I never interviewed him before, nothing like that. And I laid it out and I said, here's my deal. I'm doing this, and like, there's a lot of people I could have asked, You're the number one person I would love to have on and I respect you and on and on any DM me back, yes I'm in and like that's so I was really reticent to do it because it just kind of feels kind of lame your d I mean, someone want to come on my podcast, and like, you gotta just put that aside and just absolutely go for it. And he did it, and he was fantastic. And if I had not shot that shot, like it would have been so stupid and short sighted. So go for it. It's it's never been easier in your life to meet influential people, public people, to get in contact with them, use it. Please just go for it.

If it doesn't work, and I think you have that, it's just be yourself. If you're on air, the same person is off the air, it goes a long way.

You like the music selection today.

This is great. I just listen anything that does not begin with somebody that starts with lil I don't know that stuff. I don't know the Baby Rappers.

I go Little Dirk and Liliotti.

He doesn't, I don't and I just don't. I know Little John a little bit. But when we walked out and they were playing the nineties hip hop, like this is the stuff that I warmed up to when I was playing in the nineties, same songs, and so it's such a relief. It's great. I love hearing that.

All right, let's end here. Football question about the Jets talented roster. Aaron Rodgers on a mission. Buffalo Bill's a pretty good team in Western New York. Miami Dolphins, they've been in the playoffs first couple of years under Mike McDaniel. What's this all gonna look like once we get to the season.

I said this today and Good Morning Football.

There's this moment in time where I think the Bills roster wise took a giant step back losing Stefan Diggs and Motor Singletary and they're banking on a lot of young guys.

The Dolphins took.

A major step back losing Christian Wilkins and Andrew Van Ginkel and Savian Howard, and the Patriots are in a river building road. So like, this is the year, and I said it, you don't you don't sign Tyrod Taylor as your backup if you think this is like a ten year thing. You're signing Tyrod Taylor to your backup because you think this is the year. And if Rogers goes down, we've got a reliable guy who can carry the load. So yeah, Like if the Jets don't win the division, I think it's a disappointment.

A year ago, we all have to make MVP picks and go on air and do this big dramatic presentation and really put your name on it and maybe get hyped up and we get mocked. My pick last year was Aaron Rodgers, like I think he will win the MVP last year and went the whole thing. Of course it didn't happen for crazy reasons, but I will. I'll say it again. It's best quarterback I've ever seen. It'll be fantastic. This year, they'll be in the playoffs this year. Division don't know yet, super Bowl on and on. I think they will be in the playoffs because, honestly, like, if not now, when everything is set up perfectly and all anybody wants say, if we stay healthy, just healthy, when you're saying if we stay healthy, that means you are set, because that is the only thing they could do, really, not the old line that d the pass rush. If not now, when I.

Think it's now, Peter Schruger, Kyle Brant, thank you so much. We're gonna save you a seat for the Jets home opener against the Patriots Thursday nights, Thursday night game.

We should go to that Jets Patriots Thursday night met life.

Not a Jewish holiday or anything. We got this checked my calendar.

I don't think of That'm not sure the pass line you got. Thanks h
