No, thanks for coming up to the studio. What do you think of the new look?
Appreciate man, this is nice. This is a really nice setup. I'm excited to be the first one in here.
Yeah, very intimate setting. What has the past week or so been like for you post Giants? The preseason concludes, and then what do you guys do in terms of assembling that final roster, making those decisions, looking at waivers, and then finally getting a practice squad together.
Yeah, I mean it's a long week, you know for us, especially the pro scouts, like they've been watching these guys every week of the preseason around the league, so they're ready to go. And then a lot of our discussions is just trying to get the right fifty three for our team. You know, that's what's most important to us, and so there's a lot of discussions between ourselves and the coaching staff and the scouts, and you know, at the end of the day, we want to try to get it right. There's some really difficult decisions that end up happening that last you know, those last couple of days really, but it is rewarding when you get to what your your fifty three man roster looks like, and if you have an opportunity to add a couple guys after that that you think can help you, that's exciting too. So it's a lot of late nights and a lot of coffee, but it is rewarding at the end of it.
The roster's never finally set, But do you have a time to reflect at all over the last couple of days or maybe even there's a point during training camp and say, well, we've really come a long way since this program started Sala twenty twenty one as far as what we're looking for in a player and where we're at now.
Yeah, absolutely, I think it's streamlines like our process a lot of the time in terms of the players that we bring in. We have such great communication with our scouts and coaching staff that a lot of times we know exactly what they're looking for and we don't even need to really get into it with them much. We funnel them the guys that we know they want, and then we come up to, you know, come up with a consensus amongst the two groups, which has been which has been huge, and the roster itself. I think you see that takes shape, especially on defense with some of the guys we've been able to develop over the years, and then where we're at on offense, especially with the offensive line now, just feel like that group is settled and is in such a good place right now, and Keith's done such a good job with them that you know, we're really excited about that group as well.
I want to bounce around a little bit, but how unique is this that initial roster that you have three undrafted free agents making the team along the defensive line and Lendon Taylor, Braydon McGregor, and Eric Watts.
Yeah, I mean, it's a credit to all three of those players, like they earned it. They've done They've done a phenomenal job for us. It's a credit to you know, Aaron White Cotton who obviously developed those guys, Andy Davis, who was our our our scout, our crosscheck scout who got all three of those guys along with Aaron as an undrafted free agent, as well as the area scouts who scouted them. Jonathan Stiegel scouted McGregor, Andy scouted Leonard Taylor, and Jordan Burton's scouted Eric Watts and those guys, identifying them knowing what they were looking for in the defensive line. Like I mentioned earlier, those guys fit exactly what we're looking for and it's a credit to all the people involved in that process to be able to have something like that. It's a pretty unique story. I don't know that there's been three undrafted guys that have made it at one position group, especially a fairly deep one to begin with, So it's really a group effort and things like that don't happen if everyone's not on the same page.
I think you have eight guys on the current roster that are former on draft or free agents. If you include your ball into the mix because he starts a season on IR what does that say about you guys mine in the fields and also the coaching staff and them developing these guys.
Yeah, I mean the undrafted free agency is as important as the late rounds. Really. You know a lot of those guys. Tony Adams is an example of it, where you know, if you hit on one or two of those guys, what it can do for your roster is huge. And again I think it's a credit to our coaching staff and how they invest in developing these players. It's a credit to our scouts who are on the road identifying these guys. You get to the end of the draft and a lot of the players, maybe you're upset that they're not drafted, but they can oftentimes go to a really good situation and we've been able to find that in a lot of guys, and it's it's such a cool story for the player, but it's also a cool story for the people who are involved in getting them here and help them develop him once he's here too.
What were the conversations like with White Cotton prior to training camp and then when you guys actually did make that first initial fifty three.
Yeah, it was really cool. I mean a Aaron's been throughout the process is a great communicator of what he wants right, and that's why we've been able to, you know, add so many players to his group that we've had success with. It was cool not just for those those three, but also for Tack McKinley to be able to make the team too. And I think you look at you know, we have two first round picks, We have Michael Clemens, we have the guys that made it and Tack, and they all come from different ways and how they got here, but they've all earned it. And it's a credit to Aaron and really, you know Tim, I captain him and Brick and coach Salid for how how the culture they've developed in that room.
McKinley's a former first round pick in your position. When did he jump on your radar? And also can you talk about what he did out here on the fields throughout training camp because I think people saw him, especially that last game flash against the Giants, but he was always buzzing to tower out here.
Yeah. I mean coach Oldbrook was with him in Atlanta, so they have they have a relationship, and he had been he had been kind of bringing him up to us a couple of times and talking about the shape he was in and all that sort of stuff. So we brought him in for a workout during VET Mini camp and he looked really good at that time and we decided to sign him. And uh to tax credit, he has just taken off from that point. He's had an awesome training camp. Uh. He he is fast, he's explosive, he's violent. He plays with the effort and the strain that we want in guys. And it's just a really cool story for him to be able to find this this defense in this front that fits him and really let his skill set takeover.
Did you like him paying homaged booker t.
Yeah, it was, Yeah, it was cool. I couldn't do that. I would get injured trying to do that, but it was good.
So I wanted to ask about that position. Obviously, you guys are gonna give Hassan Ruddick a bear hug whenever he gets here. But Will McDonald's second year, what's different about him entering his sophomore professional campaign?
Yeah, I think you see you see Will in a place where all the traits that we saw from college are are translating. How he's playing. He's playing fast, explosive, He's got elite bend and ability to contore his body in ways it makes it really difficult for people to block him. His effort in his strain and his willingness in the run game too, has improved a great deal. And we we're excited about Will. I mean Will's Will is an extremely talented player, and he's done it day in and day out in camp, and a combination of him and Germaine right now has been has been really cool for us.
Let's flip it to the other side of the line. Of Scrimma's offensive line as soon as the season ends. What are the conversations like with Joe in terms of what you guys have to do up front now here on the eve of the regular season. What do you think about this group?
Yeah, we're We're really happy with where it's at right now. I think a lot of our conversations leading up to free agency was what can we do in this period of time to improve this O line a lot? And adding Morgan, Moses, John Simpson and Tyron Smith was huge for us. You know, really acquiring Morgan was a lot that said a lot of that in motion because it allowed us to focus our attention on, you know, getting Tyron as well and being able to put bookends together move Avt inside and getting John Simpson in the process. Was was a guy that we've been excited about for a while as we watched him and Coach Carter had a great feel for him, and we feel like we've been able to kind of flip that room to an extent and then in the draft get the guy like Olu to continue to improve our depth. The cool thing about it is there's guys on our roster that are that are our swing backup guys right now. But they all started multiple games for us too, So the front line we feel really good about, but we also feel really good about the depth there.
Yeah, speaking of depth yet, Wes. Yeah, interior chest piece. You got all the wi you cross train and tackle throughout the summer, Max, Mitchell, Carter warm return. What you see an Xavier Newman this summer because there was a big time battle going on as far as that last spot.
Yeah, I think x had had a had a great preseason. You know, he is, he is tough, physical, he's violent. He plays both centering guard, as does Wes. You know, both those guys, they He and Wes fit what we want in Jets in terms of how that how hard they play, how physical they play. You know, I mentioned Jake Canson too, who's on our practice squad. But we see Jake as as a really good player for us as well and a guy who started games for us. So we're excited about that. In here, you're group of guys and you know, it was a really good battle, but in our mind we wanted to try to keep as many of those guys as we can. It's such an important position.
You guys have great tout that so many positions, but what stands out maybe above the rest as far as a flip, not just offensive line, maybe how about the offensive backfield. You got to start there in Brice Hall. But you draft a pair of impressive dudes in Braylan Allen and Isaiah Davis of course, and i Isiabana Konda. He's twenty one years old, he's two hundred and seventeen pounds, he's a four to four guy. I mean, can you talk about that quartet?
Yeah, it's a really deep room, you know, brailn in Isaiah. For rookies, what they've been able to show us so far, not just as runners but in protection and on special teams has been huge. And Izzy had an awesome camp. You know, it's a deep room. And for Eazy to respond like he did during camp and in games, I think just speaks to him. He's explosive and fast. He saw the big run he had against the Giants the other night. Those three guys being able to compliment Breee and spell Breese when here and there is to me just a really cool room with guys who can do a lot of things and compliment each other.
All right, So Waiver claims to make one. Brendon Bates, he spent the pre season with Chicago Bears. How long have you been looking at him in terms of maybe even go back to college days and what do you guys like about him and how potentially could he fit here?
Yeah, we meet every week after each round of games and Kevin Murphy and evanard One, who run our pro department day to day, do a phenomenal job of, you know, making sure the group is ready to go. In this particular case, Thomas Woody was our team scout for Chicago and he brought him up fairly early on. We watched him as a group, talked about him each week. We saw his development, we saw what he could do, and it really was just a waiting game to see if they were going to cut him. And when they decided to, we felt like that was a guy we knew, we wanted to try to target, put a claiming for him, and we were fortunate enough to get him. Other teams have put in claims for him as well, and so we're excited about him. He's big, he's strong's he's really tough as a blocker. He's got natural hands and he had three special teams tackles as well, which is always really important. So just adds to the depth of that room. And anytime we can take a shot on a guy and put him with a guy like Coach mid like, you feel really good about what he's going to be able to do with guys, and we're excited about Brendan to work with him.
Speaking of feeling really good, what do you say about the quarterback? Was out there? Number eight?
Yeah, he looks really good and yeah, I mean he's he's he's so impressive physically every day, you know, we watch him in practice and the things that he can do. He's had a couple of days where he's just been dominant and to see him come back and move around like he is is incredible. So excited for him and you know, and what he's going to help our team do. But just to see him as a leader and around the building and around the guys, you know, having that you know again in the building such such a valuable thing too. So yeah, really excited for him and for our offense and the benefits they'll have.
Can you talk about the room as a whole, because you bring in Tyrod Tayler, there's an established guy in the National Football He's going to be your backup. But Jordan Travis, he drafted him as well. What is his early what are his early stages is going to look like in his career because obviously he starts starts out on n FI.
Yeah, Tyrod obviously was a huge pickup for us as well. He's had Tyrod's had an awesome camp and the combination of Tyrod and Aaron in that room for a young guy like Jordan Travis as well as Adrian Martinez's gonna be on our practice squad, I couldn't think of a better room for two young guys to go in and soak up knowledge from those guys who and they're so willing to share it as well. It's it's a really cool dynamic. You know, Jordan's working his butt off every day to try to get back out there. Obviously dealt with a really a really challenging injury in college. But he's a he's the type of guy that's wired to make it and we're excited about his development. He's getting so many mental reps in the room with those guys and even being able to listen and see things out at practice. So he's just got to focus on the parts that he can control. But we were excited about Jordan when we drafted them, and we're really excited about this year for him and what he's going to learn as he transitions to the NFL.
You talked about Jake Hanson before. Can you speak to the benefits of having seventeen guys in their practice squad who are actually here throughout all a training camp.
Yeah. You know, we invest so much time in these guys over the course of the off season program and training camp that when those guys that show us stuff, we want to try to keep as many of them as possible. They know our scheme and our system, and we're able to sign all seventeen yesterday. Honestly, that's a credit to Dan Spioska and Christina Wedding. They coordinate all that stuff for us. I don't know how many teams were able to sign their entire practice squad back, but we were and will all be out here for practice for us, which is really important to us. We want as many guys that can help contribute to us if we ever need it, to have and ready to roll, and so we were able to do that today for our team Obviously we're always going to be looking around the league too, but we felt really good about the guys that were here in camp and what they showed us. And we're really excited about our practice squad roster as well.
IRV Charles is a special teams wolf the's on this roster. How much does it go into the evaluations when you're looking to fill depth on your roster?
Special teams value, Yes, special teams is really important. You know, a lot of these guys in order to get a jersey on game that you have to be able to contribute there, you know. And obviously Brandt, you know, he's going to remind us that of multiple times a day. But it is important. You know. We have such a great kicking unit with with with Z and Morstaed and Henny, we want to have as many good pieces around them as possible. You know. I think Thomas led to three safeties for us last year, and part of that is the cover unit. So given our defense and advantage whenever we can and making sure we have, especially with the new kickoff rules, as many guys out there that can cover, uh, you know, and help our defense out would be his ideal.
Don't give away state secrets and you're not. But how is this going to impact the league as a whole and new kickoff role.
It'll be interesting, Honestly, I think there's a level of unknown for for everyone.
You know.
I think the initial thought is that there will be more returns and more space on the returns, you know, but I think it remains to be seen how many teams just kick the ball out of the end zone and how many are willing to give up a couple more yards for a touchback. You know, I think the first three or four weeks of the season will probably determine it. So yeah, yet to be seen.
We talked about the rookies before, but not only do you have xback returning, but we saw Isaiah doing that in the preseason as well as corally. Can you talk about those guys.
Yeah, Isaiah has done a great job both kick return and his ability to punt return too. You know, he he's he's shown us, you know, we feel good about him and trust him. And Malachi's has such run talent with the ball in his hands. Both those guys are continuing to take reps and continuing to to do a good job back there. You know, we feel is a really good dual returner in addition to his offensive role. So you know, we're excited about him, but we feel like we have some depth there as well.
Can you speak to the blend on this roster. You have a bunch of very talented dudes entering year three, whether that be Garrett Wilson or Sauce Gardner or Breie Hall or Jermaine Johnson. That list goes on and on. But you just mentioned too, the grizzledbutch. When you're when you can look at the offensive line, say Morgan Moses or Tyrone Smith, or the quarterback who's in his twentieth season, Aaron Rodgers, the future first Bellot Hall of Famer. How much do you have an appreciation for the mix in that locker room.
It's really one of the coolest things to see is after practice, these young guys working with some of these older vets after practice, like Morgan and Tyron pulling Olu aside every day. You know, Garrett being able to talk to Mike Williams and Alan Thozard a little bit has been has been really cool to see, you know. And some of those third year guys now like Garrett Breese and sauce like they're becoming some of the veterans too, you know, so they have they've had veterans that they look up to that they still do. But they're also helping some of the younger guys even younger than them on our roster. And I think the team's just so connected right now and it's really cool to see that develop over time in training camp. I think that's one of the most important parts of camp is watching your team kind of gel together and and the guys that we have here in the building, you know, the players, they kind of have done that organically, which has been awesome to say.
How interested are you and seeing what this is actually going to look like from a defensive perspective, if you guys do have leads late in games, because a lot of times in the past defense has been playing at a high level offensively, quarterback instability, maybe offensive line injuries. And now you guys have the ability, at least on paper offensively, you guys could be quite explosive on inside of the ball.
Yeah, I think you know, are this this defensive front is an attack front. You know, guys like Quinn and kin Law, you know, up the middle are difficult to block, and then they're complimented by having Will and Jermaine attack and the undrafted guys we've talked about on the outside, So we feel like we always want to be deep there and have a stable deep rushers, and we feel like we have that for sure. They're complimented by by great cover guys and Sauce and DJ and MC and got our safeties on the back end Tony and Chuck, you know, and then our linebackers CJ and Quincy and Surewood putting everything together like it all works together. And I think the front is kind of the initial one that makes everything go. And if we get some leads, we feel like we could get after the quarterback, but we also feel like we have guys behind them that can allow those guys to play free and really attack.
You signed kin Law for a reason. But have you been surprised at all by what he has been out there every day?
I wouldn't say surprised. I mean his talent is what it is, it's real, and he's in such a great place now and with this scheme and with this coaching staff that I think you're just seeing him, you know, what he's always had in his body here. You're seeing him really just develop at this point, and you know, him and Q next to each other is a really cool combination of guys that both compliment each other but also you know, provide some problems for the offense. He's been awesome so far.
I've been in the league since O one. I think he's one of the biggest men I've ever seen.
He is a monster. A monster, yeah, he is.
Let's get you out on this one roster construction. You guys are pleased where you're at. It's never done, we know that. But you, guys, when you're putting a big picture together, how much do you look at your opponents, especially inside the division, and say, these are the people we have to compete against twice during the year.
I think you're mindful of it because, like you said, you are going against them twice and all that. But really, we try to focus on what's best for us, you know, our scheme, our coaches, and we try to We try to say, how can we provide the best or make the best Jets team possible. So that's really what guides our decisions, not so much our opponents and how we match up with teams, because you have to be able to win any game that you play. So it's really just a focus on trying to be the best team that we can be and making sure that we're bringing in the players that fit the culture and everything that we want and that we've tried to establish here.
And speaking of fitting the culture, it seems like you guys on the personnel side, you got a real tight knick group, And can you speak to that?
Yeah, we do. I mean, we've had such a great, great group. Joe's leadership is awesome and he's allowed us to all develop and to all be connected with each other, and really between him and coach Sala, the camaraderie we have with the coaching staff is incredible. Our our communication with them is awesome. We talked about it a little bit before, but just having that those open lines of communication, being able to share things and thoughts and ideas with each other, both a personnel staff together and then also with our coaching staff, to me, it's it's why you have a lot of these success stories that we talked about early on, because it doesn't happen with that level of camaraderie and cohesion, and and you know, it's it's really exciting for me to see that. NUS.
You appreciate your time. You came on board here the main voyage inside the studio with the new podcast.
Look man, it's nice. Appreciate it man, Thank you.
Thanks brother,
