Public servants receive R70 billion in medical aid subsidies to use private hospitals. Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi says this amount could fund public healthcare if all used public hospitals instead.

All individuals who receive their salaries from the public service are entitled to medical aid subsidies, which allow them to use private hospitals. These subsidies amount to R70 billion. If a policy were introduced requiring everyone to use public hospitals instead, that R70 billion would immediately be redirected to the public healthcare system," says Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi.
