Pick n Pay reports R299m loss despite improved trading & The evolution of SA's forecourts sector

Stephen Grootes speaks to Pick n Pay CEO Sean Summers about the retailer's latest interim results and progress in its turnaround strategy. The group has narrowed its headline loss by 31.9% to R299 million, while turnover increased 2.4% to R60.5 billion. However, Pick n Pay's core supermarket business remains under pressure, recording a R516 million trading loss, despite improved margins and tighter cost controls. With Boxer continuing to drive group profitability and online sales growing 35.4%, how close is Pick n Pay to returning to profitability?

In other interviews, Greg Solomon, CEO of Pantry talks about how South Africa's petrol stations are evolving into major retail destinations. New research values the country's forecourt convenience store market at R42 billion, with 57% of shoppers visiting these stores at least once a week. As fuel price pressures squeeze consumers and competition from supermarkets, fast-food outlets and delivery apps intensifies, petrol stations are increasingly relying on convenience stores, takeaway meals and coffee sales to drive profitability.
