The South African Informal and Township Economy is estimated to be worth around R900 billion, and according to research studies, township restaurants are
major economic drivers in South Africa, anchoring this broader said informal and
township economy.
A study from the University of Cape Town states that
“These vibrant food and hospitality businesses, which include shisanyamas, fast-
food joints, and shebeens, are vital in alleviating food insecurity, employing
locals, and driving local GDP”
This Youth Day, that’s the lens from which we will be looking at Grab A Bite,
today. As you know, every Tuesday, we invite chefs on the show to tell their
stories and profile their culinary business.
Today, we are looking at those businesses from a purposeful perspective and how
they are helping to uplift communities, empower and upskill young people.
We will be looking at three businesses today; Native Rebels, Hungover Boksburg,
and Bite Me Bakery, to hear how they are helping to shape and change young
lives.
