Hannah and Lamorne hold a loft meeting and go deeper on Quick Hardening Caulk. They talk dirty pronunciations, how to properly break a fish tank, where Max's hand was during that scene, and a serial fish killer.
Now Loft me tang Loft Meeting Meeting.
I still cannot believe the audacity of the title of this episode that we recapped this week, and we get to say it again here at the Loft Meeting because we are taking your questions on two nineteen.
Quick heartening.
Cock whoa No.
First of all, crazy, it is crazy that that is the name, s a.
Cul It's yeah, that's what it's crazy if you say it the way you just say that. You just said, you said quick heartening cock. Cock coulk colk, Yeah, colleague culkin. You don't say mcaulay cockin I.
Don't think it's pronounced kulk. It's cock. Well, I'm waiting. You can look okay, I'm googling it right now. You can do pronunciation, Hannah.
Because I'm anti pervert, I don't look at it that way.
Look first, it sounds like k aa k. First thing when I look at pronunciation, which to me is we're gonna hear it.
Hold on, let's see cock.
Come on now, not that that woman's up. That that woman there is a pervert. She a pervert. Cock.
That's how it's pronounced. So that's not on me. That's just me knowing how to pronounce the word I.
Don't trust A don't but any of this stuff, it's just affirming. So you want to dive in, dive in.
Oh.
Before we get going, though, I do want to share something super exciting. I would say maybe one of the top things that I get asked about all the time on this show is about the wardrobe.
The wardrobe, the bird shirts.
You know, Zoe's dresses, CC's cool model clothes, like Nick's clothes. That just Jake being j all of it right. We get asked all the time about wardrobe. And the head of costumes was Deborah McGuire, one of the most iconic costumers in the entire industry, and her and I were texting today and I think she's going to come and do a loft meeting with us and answer all your questions. So I encourage you. We'll give you the information at the end of this episode. Do you have any questions specific things like this dress, this shirt, this look this episode, send them in because we're hopefully gonna have Deborah on the show and she will then be able to share all of that stuff and spill it. She also did Friends, by the way, so yeah, legend be good, good, good, All right, Okay, let's dive in question number one.
You want to go?
Sure? Hey, y'all, Okay, I'm not gonna mess around with you today. I have some hard hitting questions I want answered because OVS I am a die hard fan. YadA YadA, YadA. Love the podcast. In season two, episode nineteen, Quick Hardening, Caulk, do you guys know is Jake and Zoe actually broke that giant fish tank and have water spill all into the loft. That was hilarious. I also caught Jake in that episode looking at his notes. No right at the start, he looks down into the bar at his script. You can just see the edges of it on camera.
At thirty nine Zex get out of Town.
Lemurn, was Max actually touching your butt with his hand down your wetsuit when you lost your phone down there? Did you improv the joke about just peeing in the ocean and with a number two? Help? Because that was hilarious. Naomi from Brisbane, Australia, Naomi, Naomi.
Naomi, Naomi. If I love the name Naomi.
It's a good name, the great name, great name.
Did they actually break the giant fish tank? And have water spell all in the law.
Well, well yes they did. But what happens is it's rigged. So props set design that whole squad, they come together, they build a fish tank that can easily fall apart. And that's what they did there. Much like when you see a glass bottle get broken on someone's head, it's actually not real glass. It's sugar. It's like, yeah, it's prop bottle. It's like a sugary plastic key thing that's made to look a certain way and then when you hit it, it explodes. Same with this fish tank. I'm not one hundred percent sure what materials they use for the fish tank, but I could tell you it was real water and they were real fish in there that did need to get cooked later that No, the boy was hungry, No I'm kidding. Oh yeah, no, So so that is my understanding of what happened with the fish tank and water was spilled.
Yes, that's a fact.
That is a fact. You caught Jake looking at his notes.
I can't believe I'm going to go back and rewatch that moment. Because here's the thing. That's when when CC gets a job at the bar and whatever season that is.
I remember Jake telling me.
This is the best because everybody else had to be on the other side of the bar. There's nowhere to hide your sides, which is like, your sides are just like your pages of the day that you're doing with your lines on them. And so he was like, but on the bar, you just placed them down here, and it's like a It's like an old Brando trick, right, like whatever you like, you look down like you're thinking on the scene, then you'll look up and say words.
So I believe it.
I did not catch that, but I absolutely believe it because I am also very guilty of it.
Yeah, I'm not guilty of that because I'm a professional. But what this reminds me of is an episode of I forget what show it was, or a movie, but Tyler Perry did a movie where there's a judge delivering like a verdict or whatever, and just in general in that scene with the judge, but when they shoot over the judge's shoulder to the courtroom, you can clear as day see his script with his lines highlighted. They kept it in the shot, So yeah, no disrespect to our editors, but they probably weren't looking. They probably didn't think that's what it was, because the audacity of Jake Johnson to do something like that is just plain ridiculous, you know, and I think the fans deserve better.
I applauded. All right, So this is the big question, lo Morn.
Was Max actually touching your butt with his hand down your wet suit when you lost your phone?
If you know Max, then you know the answer is yes. Correct. Max goes for it. There's a moment in the he wasn't touching my like beare button if anyone's wondering, No, But there was a moment where we were doing a photo shoot. I think it was season two, season three, maybe Sason three, I forget, but we were doing a photo shoot and they kept trying to get me to smile. And I just hate smiling in photo shoots, like big group shots. I just hate it. I just want to look how I want to look, but they always go smile, Lamur, you got you gotta show us your teeth. Smile.
Showing your teeth is a terrible thing to say to somebody.
I'm always like, no, I'll show you my teeth when I say fuck you. But I didn't feel like smiling and Max comes up from behind me and starts pinching my butt and tickling me, and I go like, this, they snapped, They snapped the photo and that's what they use on the building.
Of course they did.
And I knew. And here's why I knew that because I didn't know when the billboards had gone up. For my friend Nikki. She called me and she goes because I hadn't spoken to her in a while, and she goes, just saw your billboard over the freeway and I was like yeah. She goes, uh, you look weird. I was like, wait, what, hello to you too, and she's like, I'm just telling you you should probably talk to somebody about it. And I've over the years have voiced how much I hate that particular photo shoot.
Huh. It's funny because here's the thing. What I bet it was.
Remember when we were watched that episode where he says, dance dummy, Jake says, and I was like, that was not in character. He just wanted to finish.
And I bet you that was it.
The day was going along, We're doing the big gallery photo shoot. They wanted to be over and they just kept shooting you and you wouldn't smile.
And maxis just like.
I'm gonna make it happen, and so they totally lightly assaulted you.
Yeah, they sometimes get fed up in my Shenanigans, but they didn't know where I was coming from. And that's okay. I don't I don't blame them. You know, it's my melanated instincts which I don't like to have people scream at me and tell me to smile.
So I understood, Ye understood.
Did you improve the joke about peeing in the ocean and wou a number two help?
Yeah? No, the peeing part was scripted, but I think the number two, the number two with the number two help, that was my joke. Yeah, so the the original came from the og writers on the show, which I think still to this day are the best writers in the business. And then yeah, I just kind of added to it.
Next question, I love Odette Annabel's character for Shane in the Quick Hardening Cock episode when she was nixt manager for Guys Night. How did that character come about? Was she a fan and wanted to guest star or did she audition for the role from Samantha.
That's a good question. I actually don't know the answer to that.
I don't know the answer to that either. So here's what we will do. We will reach out to Odett editor there, Yeah, and we will try to get that answer for you.
Now here's the thing I will say is that I spoke to Sathia Baba, who played Shabron, and he was, you know, a friend of Liz Merriweathers and an accomplished actor himself, and he auditioned. I feel like they auditioned almost everybody to be on this show, so I wouldn't be surprised if she auditioned.
Yeah, It's it's hard to say because she I think at that time she was on another Fox show.
Oh got you?
So maybe it was an offer.
Maybe? All right? So who came up with the freshwater bitch Fish quote? The most quoted line for me, Adrian.
I want to say that scripted? Yeah, for sure, I want to say that's that's scripted. However, it's hard to tell with when Max goes off script when you think when you think about it, but that is indeed in the script, the Freshwater bitch Fish. He just makes it seem so fluid and loose.
But the best writers room, best writers room, all of these quotable lines so funny.
I have to say the quick hardening cock episode is one of my favorites. Schmid's obsession with the fish kills me every time, especially compared with Winston's reluctant humoring of him and accompanying him on this journey. Who came up with this storyline? Where did you film the beach scene? And how difficult was all of this to do? New Girl gets funnier each time I rewatch. I'm so glad you brought the podcast back. I love finding out these behind the scenes moments. Joe from Edinburgh, Scotland. Mm, okay, first part of that question, who came up with the storyline?
So this episode was actually written by Ryan co and it was directed by the brilliant, beloved Loreen Scafaria.
I loved her so much, wonderful.
So he's the one who wrote this episode with the help of all the incredible writers that we had that season.
And where did you film the beach scene?
Read?
Down in Venice?
Yeah?
No, we were in Santa Monica in this and we had shot there before. But there was this tiny little area, some little cove like area that we were filming and it didn't feel it felt janky. To me, it didn't feel like you were just like Jankie Like it was like it almost felt man made in a way, but it wasn't. It was almost like, oh, let's just set up a camera here in this random location where this little pool of water is. That's kind of how it felt when we were there on the day. But yeah, we were in Santa Monica and I can't I can't pinpoint the exact longitude latitude, but it was. It was in Santa Monica.
But you'd recognize it if you were brought back there. You'd be like, I know this hot.
Oh absolutely, absolutely. The memories they come flooding back.
The obsession with fish thing that they're talking about in this question also makes me laugh because I think I've told you this. I talked about it when we did the recap that I get tagged. I get tagged in so many pictures of lionfish. It's really wild.
Oh that's right.
Yes, yeah, it's a really funny thing. I just I get it all the time. And it took me a while to figure out why. And we did, and I was like, now you know.
And you know, yeah, and now you know, and you kind of look like a lionfish. I am a leo just like you.
There you go. People always call me lionfish little more.
All right, last question, it's a biggie Hello. I have a question and a story. Feel free to share. Well, we're gonna don't know what it's gonna be. We're just gonna get We read these cold. By the way, it's kind of fun relating to this episode. At the end of the episode, when the fish tank gets destroyed, was this real?
Water?
Just answered that, yes it was. How was the scene filmed with a prop tank?
That's what?
Yeah? And how many takes did they do in order to get this shot? I would probably say one.
That would be one, guess one.
So what they would do is before getting to the part where the fish tank breaks, they will shoot the whole scene over and over and over and.
Over and over to the point before it breaks up until that point.
And then what they would also do sometimes potentially move it out of the way and then shoot from like Cowboy meaning waste up so you don't see the floor right, and then come back in a with a three camera set up a wide immedium all the angles and then let it break and then and then you go from there because you don't that cleanup is so aggressive. You don't want to have to do that multiple times because the water goes everywhere. And knowing our crew though you know such a I mean they they they think of everything. I'm sure there was some sort of tarp on the ground that when it's spilled, they could easily just kind of pull the corners up and get a bulk of that water out immediately, sure to protect the floors of of of the set. So I'm assuming that's what happened. More than likely that's what happened on that day. And it was real water, Yes, real water.
Since it's so it talks about fish, I thought it would tell you about my five goldfish Nick.
Jess, Winston, Ceci and Schmidt.
I have accidentally killed at least twenty fish, Oh God, in the past turn dark Turn. So I was not expecting these fish to last for much more than a few months. Fast forward over a year later, and me and my husband are planning to move across the country for my grad school. We decided the best way to move the fish was to put them all in a five gallon bucket, throw them in the back seat of my car, sorry, and just hope for the best. After packing up my apartment, we loaded the fish into the bucket and drove to our friend's house to stay the night so we could leave bright early. The next morning. Nick died immediately. We hadn't even left town yet, but Nick knew he wasn't interested in making the trip before it even started. The rest of the fish made the three day journey from Utah to Missouri in the middle of the summer. Just died a few months later because the tank was too dirty, so we cleaned the tank. Then CC died because it was too clean. The only one left her Schmidt and Winston, which is funny because spoiler alert, they both have the same name. They were a little awkward around each other at first, also very on brand, but they're.
Best friends now.
Thank you so much.
I love the show and the podcast. You guys are doing the Lord's work every week. Emily Weikeman Boulevar, Missouri.
The great story.
That is an epic story.
That's an epic story, just winning and winning.
But also I want to talk about Emily your parenting skills. As far as the fish cup. You stuck these fish in a bucket. Everybody knows that Nick don't do well and no bucket.
No, that's why he gave up beforehand. He just looked at the bucket and died.
He said, no, this ain't for me. He's my time, y'all. And then Jess and then c C. Well, it's good to know that the most resilient ones are Schmidt and Winston, which is like real life because I'm a pretty tough guy and and I really appreciate you guys out there acknowledging that. It's it's been fun for me being the tough guy on set, and thank you Emily for noticing it.
But we're just gonna not talk about the twenty previous stats. We're just gonna just keep waltzing over that.
Yeah you don't, Yeah, maybe fish aren't you.
Maybe we just leave it with Winny and Winny and just after that, maybe move on to more resilient animal.
Well, she's probably leaving ours that she probably hunts fish. Switch is kill at least twenty of them, and she's like a fish hunter. It's like a shark hunter. Yeah, Emily, thank you very much. Thank you to everyone who sent in questions, your comments and remarks, and we love that and we want to encourage you to continue to do so. That is our show.
