As part of Women’s Month, we speak to Mokebe Thulo, CEO of AWARE.org, about the organisation’s Sober Pregnancies campaign and its efforts to raise awareness among young South Africans about alcohol harm, maternal health and the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). We unpack the latest KwaZulu-Natal findings from the 2026 Sober Pregnancies Research Report, common misconceptions about alcohol use during pregnancy, and the importance of university-based programmes in influencing healthier choices. Mokebe also discusses how young people can support alcohol-free pregnancies and how student surveys can help shape future interventions and public education initiatives.
