This Sunday, the SA Indian Girmitiya Ancestral Roots organisation will host the annual Girmitiya Arrival Day Walk, commemorating 165 years since the arrival of Indian indentured labourers to South Africa. The 16th of November holds deep historical and emotional significance — a day to remember the resilience, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of those who journeyed from India to forge new lives on South African soil.
Joining Varshan Sookhun in conversation are Praneal Singh, Des Govender, and Leshan, who unpack the rich history behind the term Girmitiya — derived from the Bhojpuri word for “agreement” — and its connection to the Indian indentured labourers who arrived in former British colonies, including South Africa, Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana, Trinidad, and Suriname.
The discussion also explores fascinating stories of Girmitiya life, including their investment in gold, and delves into the global Girmit network that continues to preserve and celebrate this legacy.
Tune in to learn more about the Annual Girmitiya Arrival Day Walk, the programme of events, and why remembering this part of history remains vital for young South African Indians today.
