Episode Summary:

Join Chris Jolly and Dr. Ali Robinson as they delve into the multifaceted world of the Bible in this revealing episode. Tackling the fundamental question, "What is the Bible?" Dr. Robinson offers an enlightening perspective, describing the Bible as more than just a singular book but as a diverse library of texts reflecting centuries of faith and tradition. This discussion outlines the Bible’s composition, from the revered stories of the Old Testament to the transformative messages of the New Testament.

Listeners will appreciate the exploration of different biblical authors, the impact of language and translation, and the historical contexts that shaped these sacred texts. Dr. Robinson emphasises that, despite modern critiques about its authenticity, the Bible's consistent narrative and historical reliability inspire faith communities worldwide. Both historical occurrences like the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and theological aspects like the role of the Holy Spirit in personal faith are examined here, shedding light on why the Bible remains trustworthy and relevant.

Key Takeaways:
The Composition of the Bible: The Bible is comprised of multiple books, often likened to a library, and not just a single piece of work. Each book's testament reflects different periods and communities' interactions with the divine.
Trusting the Bible's Authenticity: Despite modern skepticism, historical evidence such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the consistent use and preservation of biblical texts by faith communities support its authenticity.
Translation Nuances: Various translations exist due to the complexity of converting ancient languages into modern tongues. Different Bibles offer different interpretations, each valuable for understanding the full scope of biblical messages.
Importance of Community in Bible Reading: Engaging with the Bible through community study and discussion can enrich personal understanding and reveal new insights.
Faith and Practice: The principles from both the Old and New Testaments emphasise a God of continuity, inclusion, and relationship, pivotal in the believer's spiritual journey.

Notable Quotes:
"The Bible is not one book. It's lots and lots of little books that have been pulled together based on what has been helpful for Jewish and Christian communities."
"One of the key things in that is that you’ve probably heard that there are These two parts to the Bible, right? That there's this Old Testament, and there's this New Testament."
"I think God was purposeful in the fact that he was in charge of what we ended up with in this so-called Bible."
"The translations committees emerge because they’re trying to help us engage with this text in a meaningful way."
"Reading the Bible in community is a really beautiful way and a reflection of the Church."

TRAILER: The New Christian

Intro

For Argument's Sake

Be Our Guest - Jeri Jones Sparks

Through The Wardrobe

With All Due Respect - Less aggro, more conversation. Is it even possible to have a deep discussion without it descending into chaos? Michael Jensen and Megan Powell du Toit think yes, and want to show the rest of us how to do it. There’s plenty of things they disagree on: free will, feminism, where you should send your kids to school and what type of church you should go to. But there are also plenty of other things that they have in common. They want to talk about all these things with conviction. But they also want the conversation to be constructive. Tune in to find out if that’s possible.

Episode Summary:

In the latest episode of "With All Due Respect," hosts Megan Powell du Toit and Michael Jensen dive into the complex and timely topic of immigration in Australia. This conversation couldn't be more pertinent as recent protests, the March for Australia, have stirred national debate about whether the country faces an immigration problem and how people, especially Christians, should respond. The discussion progresses to explore the nuanced aspects of immigration, including its impact on cultural identity, the rising presence of non-Christian faiths, and how statistics can often misrepresent the real picture, creating unwarranted fear and tension.

Joining the conversation is Jeri Jones Sparks, a Tamil Indian Australian with an active ministry presence, who shares her experiences and insights on living as an immigrant and working within the church to foster intercultural understanding. The episode further highlights the gripping SBS series "The Secret DNA of Us," which unveils the hidden ethnic makeup of Australian towns. This, coupled with stories of individual ancestry, shines a light on Australia's multifaceted identity. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of religion, culture, and social policy.

Key Takeaways:
Immigration Debate: Recent protests have highlighted the complexity surrounding immigration in Australia, often fueled by misinformation and political agendas.
Cultural and Religious Shifts: Australia's demographic changes bring both challenges and opportunities as the country navigates a more multicultural and religiously diverse population.
Christian Response: The necessity for Christians to redefine what it means to engage with 'the other,' drawing from biblical examples of how to treat foreigners among us.
Intercultural Church Dynamics: The importance of churches evolving towards interculturalism, incorporating various cultural perspectives to enhance community and belonging.
Understanding Heritage: Emotional and personal journeys uncovering one's ancestry, as showcased in the SBS series, can redefine individual and communal identity.

Notable Quotes:
"We're not as good at estimating numbers or proportions. It all comes through filters of bias." — Megan Powell du Toit
"I think there's going to be some kind of shift in our normal of engaging with cultural commentary." — Jeri Jones Sparks
"It's really messy. There's going to be conflict. But there's something gospel-hearted in how it shapes our gathering." — Jeri Jones Sparks
"The church has a lot to teach our society by modeling that kind of internationalism, that kind of welcome which is blind to race." — Michael Jensen
"When we know that it's God who appoints where and when all people should live, who are the people that God has put around us?" — Jeri Jones Sparks

Tune in to find out if that’s possible.

This episode has been one of the highest listened to episodes in the WADR catalogue! With schoolies ongoing as well as the holiday season just over the horizon, we'd like to replay this ep and to stir some thought and discussion.

In this episode, the WADR team talk about how to have better sex. No, this is not Megan and Michael's opportunity to present the evangelical version of the karma sutra. Rather, they want to talk about the ways Christianity has got sex right - or a lot of the time wrong - and what can be done better for everyone's sake.
First up, Megan and Michael invite on to the show the co-author of the influential Christian book The Great Sex Rescue, Sheila Wray Gregoire. Sheila shares what she and her co-authors discovered when they talked to 22,000 Christian women.
Then the WADR duo talk about the Australian #metoo moment and what they think about consent education.
Finally, we finish the show with the film Give Me Sex Jesus, a title that sells itself. And consider this your warning. This episode is talking about sex, so it is definitely for mature audiences.

The Gospel of Mark – Peter Bolt

Let's get into the first Gospel in the New Testament – the Gospel of Matthew. David Starling (Morling College, Sydney) guides us through the "Matthewness" of what Matthew reveals to us about The Gospel. As David helps us to see, the Gospel according to Matthew relates to its age-old backdrop, the justice and righteousness of God, and heartfelt desire to obey the Lord Jesus.

Meet Our Guest

David Starling is Morling College’s Vice Principal (Academic), as well as Dean of Bible and Theology, and lecturer in New Testament. David worked as an English teacher in Western Sydney before completing theological studies and serving as a pastor in Sydney's Inner West.

The Gospel of Matthew – David Starling

Welcome to The Gospel According to the Gospels. The gospel of Jesus Christ is well known and widespread. But what EXACTLY is The Gospel? Can you boil it down to 25 words or less, or do you need whole chapters? Is it just one thing Jesus - or MORE – from sacrifice to salvation, forgiveness to forever? Around the world, in different times and places, the gospel actually seems to be different. Or have a particular focus. Emphasis. Outcome. So, do we really know what the gospel is? Using the four biographies of Jesus in the New Testament, we will together explore The Gospel - according to the Gospels. Each episode, a different expert will guide us through one of the Gospels, or a related theme, to galvanise our grip on the gospel of Jesus Christ. To inspire us to love and cling to it more and more and more.
