Uh, e-blast websites, you name it, they do it. Thank you guys for making this show happen, really appreciate you. And let's get to it. Let's get to why we're doing this show today. You guys are gonna love this one. We've got another group coming to Key West, and this one is a seven-piece band. They were formed back in 2017, known as Yotley Crew. That's right, Yatley Crew, uh, they, they've really kind of they really restarted the yacht yacht rock craze, um, they're also known as the Titans of soft rock.
And they're gonna be coming to the Key West Theater on October 29th. You can get tickets there at the Key Westheatre.com, and if you're not doing that yet, once you hear these guys and we talked to, uh, their, their lead guy today, you're gonna be buying tickets. Um, they caught the attention of Jimmy Buffett who signed them to his own label, Mel Melboat Records, so we got a Key West tie in there, we'll talk about that.
They've toured the globe since, uh, since then they've sold out shows from Europe to, uh, all over the US. Um, they have their full steam ahead tour going on right now. They're in their third year of residency at the Palms Casino Resort in Vegas, and they released their first EP Seize the Day, SEAS Seize the Day in 2023, and, uh, and we're gonna get to it. So with us today is the lead vocalist, Phillip Daniel, AKA Philly Ocean. Philly, thanks so much for being with us on the podcast. Great to have you, man.
Heck, yes, man. I'm so excited to be here. It's
great. Cool, so you guys are everywhere, um, I always ask the talent in our bands that come down because uh Key West is is a known place, but not everyone's been here. Have you or the band, have you guys been here before professionally or just for leisure or is this a first time?
You know what, we were in Key West, uh, just a little bit, uh, ago, maybe a few months ago, but we were down there for a private show, you know, we got hired to play these.
You know, these private shows sometimes they're like, you know, uh, you know, really rich people's, you know, parties or whatever. It wasn't, it wasn't
my show. It wasn't my party.
It wasn't here, but maybe next year, you know, um, but, uh, yeah, we were down there. I think it was for an insurance company or something, and we got, we, we spent like 4 days and it was my first time in Key West and I have to tell you.
I fell in love. Like, it's one of my absolute favorite places and I'm really stoked that we're going back because, of course, you know, we go there, we're playing a private show and it's maybe 150 people, you know, a lot of times the corporate gigs are really fun and people get into it, but they're not there to see us. They don't always know what they're, you know, they don't even know or care about the entertainment. When we go and we put on a show and people know that they're coming out, it is a full-on.
Party, like, you know, hundreds and hundreds of people show up, sometimes thousands, and it's, you know, it's a really amazing experience. So we're stoked to be bringing our show to Key West and, and we want to invite everybody to come out because it's just gonna be a blast.
I, I can tell, I mean, I, I'm watching your videos, we'll talk about some of that and of course, we'll get into, you know, you guys aren't just this young
rock band that decided to get together, the talent is phenomenal, your your accolades and who you guys have been signed by, and I don't wanna make this show about Jimmy Buffett, but we are talking about Key West, and he did sign you guys. Can I just ask you real quick, Philly, how how did that happen? what was that phone call, what was the what transpired to make you guys sign with Buffett and and for our listeners, did you get a chance to, you know, meet Jimmy and get to know him at all?
I did, so, um, yeah, it's kind of a fun story behind that, so.
You know, our manager Andy Gould, who's kind of a music industry legend, um, we've been working with him for a long time and he had the hit really early on. He's like, you know, you guys have a really similar vibe to Jimmy Buffett because, you know, we're very, we're very performative. We put on a really high energy show and it's just feel good, you know, people come to our shows to let loose, feel good, forget their troubles, and he goes, you know, you have to be a really great fit on Jimmy Buffett's label. And so he started, you know, building a relationship there and we met.
The owner of the label a couple of times. They came out to shows and we were kind of working on something, but what really kind of brought the deal to a close was we were actually playing another private show in Palm Beach, Florida, um, at this really hoity-toity resort, and we were ready to go. I, I went, I walked down the hall to the restroom and I was walking back to the green room and I happened to get a FaceTime call from my, my wife and my little baby boy. And so I was FaceTiming with them, walking down the hall, and as I was walking back towards the green room.
I passed this like group of 3 people and one of them is this kind of older guy holding a guitar, didn't think anything of it. And as I'm passing him, he goes, hey, I like that too. And I was like, oh thanks, you know, I just, I'm just on the phone with my wife, but thanks so much, guys, you know, whatever. And
There were a couple of different events going on at the hotel, so I just went with somebody else playing whatever. I walked back in the room and the woman who's our event coordinator was like, Do you know who you just walked by? And I'm like, no, I was, I was talking to my kid, you know, and she's like, that was Jimmy Buffett. And I was like, you got, so we called our manager immediately, and he was like, oh my God, I want to try and get him over there. Anyway, that interaction.
Kind of put the, you know, put the deal together because, you know, not long after that we got the we got the contract with them and we put out our first EP which was actually last summer um that EP is available everywhere you can stream it, you can pick it up on our website if you like uh.
You know, vinyl, we have a very limited edition, uh, flamingo pink pressed vinyl, uh, of our EP called Seize the Day. And uh yeah, so it's just amazing, um, amazing to get to do that and to work with him, you know, before he sadly passed away. Um. Yeah,
you know, when you were here, did you get a chance, and again, I'm not gonna make this all about Jimmy, but you guys signed with him, it's such a great connection here to Key West, especially with your vibe that we're gonna talk about.
Uh, but did you get a chance to go over to his studio when you were here? I have to ask you that, and if not, is that something you might try and do on this trip?
So we didn't work in his studio, um, because we're based in LA, you know, and he, he was based in Florida. Um, so, but we have a, we have a producer by the name of Chris Lord Algie who's another industry legend. He's produced everybody from the Rolling Stones to Green Day to James Brown. I mean, it's.
The list of people that he's worked with is just insane. Um, so we worked with him, his studios in Los Angeles, and so we've been working a lot in his studio, um, which is called Mix LA, and, um, and he's been putting some really incredible stuff together. We have a Christmas EP that's coming out with 5 songs, and we're really proud of that because we've been able to kind of take some, some lesser known Christmas songs and one of them is an original that we wrote.
And it's just gonna be, you know, it's really joyful. It's really happy. It, it captures what we bring and what we do on stage. And so we're excited and also just Christmas is my favorite time of year personally. So I'm really excited that we've been able to put some Christmas music together for people and hopefully they can add it to their regular rotation.
You know, we're always looking for new Christmas music and new renditions of our favorite songs and stuff like that, so we're excited to put this out.
Well that that's great and and so we're talking to Philly Osh and Philly's here, obviously the lead singer of Yachley Crew coming to Key West here on October twenty-ninth at the Key West Theater. Philly, for those as we get into it here, for those who don't know you or or haven't maybe Googled or seen your YouTube videos yet, um,
You know, first of all, what can we expect, so you talk about some of your original music and you've got some incredible videos. I saw Mario Lopez, who I know must be a friend of yours, he's part of some things you guys do, uh, in a video that I love, we'll talk about sex on the beach, but what can we expect? Are you guys gonna have a lot of your, your, um, your original stuff? Are you gonna be doing covers? I've seen you guys do covers of Tito and and and, uh, sticks and other stuff, uh, you know, Seaway and and themes, but some really cool yacht rock. What kind of mix are you bringing to Key West?
Well, you know, so our, our show is based around like kind of the the core, uh, yacht rock songs that everybody knows and loves, you know, we have to play like Baker Street and Africa. You make my dreams come true, you know, we'll throw some steely Dan in there. But, you know, our show's close to 2 hours, and we, we have a lot of other songs that we add in there too that are yacht rock, you know, some crowd favorites and really.
What we've done over the last 8 years almost that we've been doing this is we've been really able to hone kind of the perfect yacht rock show that's high energy, it's fun, it's music that people love. They come out, they get to forget their worries for a while and just have a good time and connect with other people and it's, and it's awesome. So you can expect a really high energy fun show of your favorite 70s and 80s soft rock hits.
Well, well, it looks incredible, so for those who can't, they're listening, they can't see it. You guys are dressed the part, you've got the yacht, you know, the yacht captain's uniforms in the band itself, I mean, is incredible. So someone hears yacht rock and I and I'm looking at your band, there's you obviously Philly, you've got your drummer Rob Jones, Sailor Hawkins, you got the bassist Chas Ruiz, Baba Boy and oh and all the names are really cool, Tommy Boy, Stony Shores, Polly Shores, all the names, um.
You know, yeah, Matthew McDonald's on there, you're a Matt Grossman keyboardist, uh, you know, first of all, just to travel like that with with that much talent, makes me also ask you, you know, you're out in Socal in California, you're putting together this band and you're how do you go and say, hey,
This is gonna be a yacht rock band, uh, I'm looking for not just pretty good people, amazing people, and then you say, oh, and by the way, it's not just gonna be some yacht rock we do around some clubs, we're gonna be huge, we're gonna be signed by Buffett, we're gonna have a residency at the Palms, we're gonna tour the world, how does that come about?
You know, none of us knew when this started, what, what it would become. We did, you know, we genuinely just did it because it sounded fun and we loved the music.
And we thought, you know, this could be something, but let's just like, let's just do something that's different. No one was doing this at the time. And so, you know, putting this together, you kind of had people that really just, just loved the music and could play it, you know, and, and could sing it. And, and so it kind of came together pretty organically. I mean, the, our drummer and our bass player, they've known each other for 30 years. They've been in a bunch of bands. I've been in a band since I was 14, you know, pretty much everybody in the band has, has.
A lifelong musician. So, you know, we're, we're all up to the task of taking on these songs, you know, for any musicians out there, you guys know that these songs are not just three chord pop songs, you know, they have an incredible amount of intricacy to them. Um, the musicianship that it takes to play the, you know, the guitar solos, the keyboard solos, hit the harmonies, sing these melodies, they're really, really high, you know, it, it takes a lot of dedication and musicianship. So.
Putting the band together, we, we rehearsed for about 4 months before we played our first show. We kind of got an idea for the brand that we wanted to, um, present, and, you know, and, and then we've just been, you know, we continue to practice, we continue to kind of try.
Find new songs out, push ourselves, and just innovate the show as much as possible so that people are never coming back to see exactly the same show over and over again. Well,
again, I, I can't pump it up enough. If anyone just wants to look at, you know, some of your stuff. I'm here, are you there? Philly Philly, you still there?
Yeah, I'm still
here. OK, you could be could be the technology here Philly, if it does happen again, I'll I'll get you right back on.
Uh, but, but, but we had, we had all of you there, we had everything you said, and it makes me just ask you, you know, you talk about that. Do the do the fans get into it? I know you guys are dressed up in the yacht rock and I know you got kind of a buffet, Grateful Dead type following who really get into what you do and and love you. Do they sometimes dress the part too? Is that encouraged for people to get dressed up and come out?
Oh yeah, it's 100% encouraged, and that's exactly what we're all about. I mean, the fact that people get so into it and they show up to the shows, they come out dressed as yacht captains, sometimes you see people come dressed as like Gilligan and the skipper, you know, wearing, wearing little like silhouette outfits and things like that. It's just so fun and it's, that's what it's really about. It's like bringing people together and having a good time, you know, we don't take ourselves too serious.
You know, it's a very fun, somewhat tongue in cheek show, but we do take the music seriously. So no, you know, we, we've been told many, many times, like, this is like the most fun I've ever had a concert or this is the best concert I've seen in 15 years or whatever. That's what we really aspire to do is put on the best possible show we can every single time we take the
stage.
Well, it it it shows when you guys are up there and I, like I said, I've really enjoyed.
Uh, watching the videos. Now one of the videos, Sex on the Beach, I saw Mario Lopez, and this isn't just about because you guys you've got incredible producers and and everybody you work with is a legend, but Marios just seems like such a fun guy and y'all in that video, all of you guys are great on screen, or is there an acting background and how did Mario Lopez get involved with you guys? He just seems like such a cool dude. I hate him for never aging. The guy looks amazing still, of course, we all grew up with him, but, uh, give me the background on that one.
Well, so when we, uh, it's probably about 3 or 4 years ago now, in our 2nd year, we started doing, um, a residency at this club in LA that's pretty infamous. It's called the Viper Room, and it was owned by Johnny Depp at one point and, you know, just a ton of bands have played there over the years. So we, we started playing a residency there. They did like a yacht rock night once a month.
And it was pretty early on that, you know, we had all these celebrities showing up to this, you know, Craig Robinson, and then, of course, Mario Lopez, we had, um, you know, Baba Boy from the Howard Stern show show up and there's a ton of people honestly. And Mario showed up with an entire entourage of people. They were all wearing caps and tests. They were super into the show.
And uh so it was, it was pretty obvious that he was, he, he was really a big fan from the get-go. And then he hired us to play like his Christmas party for his show multiple years in a row, then he started hiring us to, we've been teaming up with him to do a fundraiser event.
Um, for a Children's Hospital in Burbank, which has been really fun. We do that about once a year with him. And, you know, and then, and then, you know, we got hired to, you know, play other events and, and then at one point, you know, meanwhile, he's still coming out to all our shows, he's like, you know, if you have to ever do a music video, I'd love to help you out, just I mean he's been a really big supporter. So, and then we've been on Access Hollywood, Access Daily with him a couple.
The time, so it's just been a really, really awesome relationship, you know, and in Hollywood, you kind of need those, you know, you need people who believe in you and who want to help and, and he's done that for us and we're incredibly grateful for him doing that because, you know, it's really, really helped get us in front of a lot more people than maybe we would have otherwise.
That's a great story, and just to be at the Viper room, there's obviously an infamous uh side to that place, but it's such an incredible place still, and just to be booked there and doing what you guys are doing and the grow
Uh, all the way to your residency if I can ask you about that in Vegas at the Palms, um, that's incredible. Can you, can you give us a little idea about how that happened and what's it like doing, you know, a 3 year, you know, stint in Vegas like that, you know, I know there's probably some fun Vegas stories you may or may not be able to tell on a podcast here, but what's it like doing the whole Vegas thing and and how cool, how did that come about?
Yeah, I mean, there's nothing too crazy going on. I mean, you know, I will say my, my guys in my band, they love to drink, but, you know, we're all family guys and, you know, and, and all that stuff. So there's nothing too crazy going on. Um, and our families are there with us. That's one of the coolest things about it is that, you know, doing this residency, you know,
On the road so much, so that becomes kind of a second home base where all of our family, our, our, our wives, our girlfriends, you know, extended family can come out and see us there, and the people at the Palms are just the best. I mean, they, they, they take such great care of us. The crowds are awesome, um, you know, the hospitality is great.
Um, and that, that came about kind of an interesting story because during the pandemic, you know, we were just trying to do anything we could to stay creative and to keep our fans engaged with us so we were doing a lot of uh initially like just videos from home.
Um, then we started doing these live stream concerts, um, and then we started getting some opportunities to do and I don't know if you have this in Key West, but, uh, in Southern California they were doing like these drive-in concerts where they would like rent a huge parking lot or like a state fair parking lot. They would erect the stage in the middle of the parking lot and then they would have all the cars drive in so everyone could be socially distanced, right? And, and, and then they, they would tune into the concert from their radio.
And they listen to us in their car, we would perform there very weird experience as a performer, by the way, but, um, you know, it was still fun to be able to perform and the woman who ultimately became the GM at the Palms when they reopened.
Happened to be, and she, by the way, she was the GM for MGM Grand and a bunch of other properties in Las Vegas. She happened to be visiting her friend in Ventura, California, and they came to our show, and she saw our show and she was blown away and she kind of put a bookmark. She goes, you know,
Wherever I end up in a couple of years, I'm gonna, I'm gonna find a way to help these guys out. I'm gonna bring them to my property. And that's how we got the inn at the Palm. And, you know, she was just such an awesome person to, you know, to see us and to think that and I, you know, obviously she enjoyed her herself at the show, but
You know, that's just kind of, we built our career on, you know, I think bringing a lot of joy and people see that and they, they naturally want to spread that. And, um, I think that's one of the, the reasons why we have so many fans come back too is because people just, they feel so happy when they're at the show and they want, they want to experience it and they want to share that.
Yeah, you know, Philly, you say this, that stuff doesn't just happen if you're incredibly talented, and it doesn't just happen if you're incredibly talented. You have to be very engaging, people just have to love what you do. You guys really seem to bring all all of that to the table, um, and all that progression is such a cool story Buffett and and the residency in Vegas. Now were you guys on Andy Cohen before all of that? Uh, I think y'all are on what? Watch What Happens with Andy at some point, was that before all of that or that? OK.
That, that was just last year, actually, um, you know, and Andy, uh, we, we, we heard through the grapevine that Andy was a fan of the show and that he really loved it and, and that, um, you know, he loves what we're up to and that he wanted to have us on the show and they thought it'd be a great pairing to have us, um, you know, at the same time they were talking about their show below deck, which, you know, exists on a yacht and is about a yacht crew and all that stuff. So, um, that was just an awesome, you know, little, little help along the way also.
Um, so that was fun. We got to travel to New York and, and go on the show and, and be there and talk a little bit about the band briefly and answer some funny questions that he posts on the spot, which is cool.
Well you guys are living the life and it's fun to see. I can't I'm I'm going to be there, I can't wait to see you guys. Um, couple cliche questions and and and we'll let you keep moving here, but, uh, of all these places you've been, and I'm I'm assuming probably somewhere in Southern California, just a cool spot where you know everybody, but
Is there someplace that really sticks out this mem, you know, when you're telling stories to your grandkids one day, you'll probably still be doing this successfully, but you're saying, hey, I remember this one time we performed at this place, or did this place. Is there any place that really jumps out in your memory right now that you just that's really fun or fun or or crazy that sticks out in your mind?
Oh yeah, well, there's 21, right before everything shut down in 2020, we played this event called Midnight at the Oasis in Yuma, Arizona of all places. And, um, it's one of the biggest car shows on the West Coast. It's like a 3 or 4 day car fest, all the, you know, all the, uh, the gearheads that bring out all of their old cars, and it's so cool. I, I, you know, I grew up, you know, my dad's a mechanic and
I grew up working on cars and have had a bunch of vintage cars, so that's cool in that regard. But they have, you know, 7 to 10,000 people there every year and they have massive concerts and we got hired to be the, the, um, the headlining act on a Saturday night. And so we go on and there was like 7000 people, literally a sea of people and there's this gigantic, you know, 50-foot catwalk that goes out into the crowd. It was, it was the coolest thing ever, um, and then there's.
Are there any videos of that real quick? Let me ask you, Philly, I won't
you keep going yep, you can see a couple of them on our YouTube channel. You can see us performing, uh, in that because they also have like a video crew. They gave us the footage to use for our social media and stuff. So you can see a couple of those performances on our YouTube channel. Just search outley crew and we'll come right up. Um, there's also these venues in the Boston area. One's called the Melody tent and the other is called Music Circus, and it's literally like a circus tent, and we perform in the round and the stage rotates.
And it's like 2000 people, I think is the capacity there. We've been selling these places out there and the crowd is just electric. They're going off. It's, it's a great venue because it's so unique and so intimate, but it's also so many people at the same time. So it kind of, it kind of bridges that gap, you know, sometimes when you play to to big crowds, you know, you can feel a little disconnected except for the people who are right up in the front. But these venues in the round are kind of weird and interesting.
Because you see everybody and they're only like 8 to 10 rows back the whole time, so it's really cool.
That's cool. Last question I'll ask you is probably, you know, one that people will say, why didn't you ask Philly this hang on one second, let's see, uh, Philly, 1 2nd for some reason text fighting you still there with me? You good?
Yeah. Alright, sorry about that. Well, I'm gonna get you out of here, but the last question I'll ask you is just this, I mean, and people will ask me, you know, why why did I not ask you this? So and for our listeners, um, you know, how how much do you guys feel, and I I want you to be not modest here and be honest, how much have you brought yacht Rock back to the world, to the United States and mainstream?
And then just for fun, you know, who are some of your 2 or 3 favorite yacht rock yacht rock guys or songs or ladies or songs that you love. So, uh, if you could just talk about those two things real quick, um, cause to me the yacht rock phenomenon is just incredible that you you guys are doing this. You make it fun and kind of
in the videos, but the music's incredible and it's just so talented and you guys are obviously doing something that, you know, if you would have come to me before that said, hey, these guys are gonna bring yacht rock and really make it something incredible again, I'd be like, oh, maybe, but you did it, um, you know, talk about that experience and some of your favorites.
You know, I, I think a lot of us just, we just feel really lucky to be here because like I said at the beginning of the interview, we, we didn't know what this was going to be, and we, we just thought it would be fun and we wanted to have fun. We wanted to make people smile, and we love the music. And so the fact that it's kind of come this far.
and and seems to be primed to go further is just the most exciting and humbling thing for us, you know, we, we just want to touch as many people as we can with the music that we do and the show that we put on and, um, you know, it probably goes without saying, but just with with all of the.
Conflict and division in the world, we, we love that we get to be kind of a a a place where people come together and and have fun and forget their troubles and and hopefully are reminded in some small way that, you know, life is actually supposed to be good and happy and it doesn't have to be filled with conflict all the time. We can just we can just love each other and we can come together and.
You know, forgive me for being overly philosophical, but that's kind of like I think like the best case scenario that, you know, we remind people of what, you know, what is good in life in some way or another.
I think people are longing for that right now. I think people will love that in Key West. You guys are bringing that joy and that fun to Key West on October 29th at the Key West Theater. Tickets will be sold out, uh, if you can still get some, they're at the Key Westheatre.com.
If you do buy tickets, play the part, put on some fine clothes, some and just bring it and you guys are gonna bring it to Philly, man, just thanks so much for coming on the show, really appreciate it and and we we look forward to seeing you guys in Key West, can't wait.
Awesome, man. Thank you so much for the interview. Looking forward to meeting you at the show. I hope you can make it out too, and uh, yeah, guys, come on out. We're gonna play some awesome yacht rock. It's gonna be a lot of
fun. You got it, brother. Thanks so much and uh we'll catch everyone else next week on the Florida Keys Weekly podcast and show.
