#108 - Why Men Lose Themselves (And How They Find Their Way Back) - with Alexander Cottle

What happens when you've built a successful life, but deep down, you know you're living a lie?

Alexander Cottle was chasing everything he thought would make him a successful man: money, career achievement, women, drugs, and the approval of others. By 27, his lifestyle had caught up with him. A stroke in a New York hotel room brought his life to a halt, and the collapse that followed eventually led to a suicide attempt.

What came next was a long journey of rebuilding his life from the inside out.

Alexander spent years travelling through Asia, studying meditation, yoga, Eastern philosophy, and eventually discovering men's work. Today, he's the founder of The Unmasked Man, an established men's work organization in the UK that helps men confront the parts of themselves they've spent their lives hiding.

In this conversation, we explore why so many men lose themselves trying to become someone they're not, and what it actually takes to find your way back.

We talk about the masks men wear, how addiction and people-pleasing can become ways of avoiding ourselves, and why learning to face our anger, grief, fear, and shame is such an important part of growing into mature masculinity.

We also get into the King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover archetypes, the importance of consistent brotherhood, and why real personal transformation isn't something that happens in a single retreat or workshop.

This is a conversation about moving from self-destruction to self-respect, from proving yourself to living with purpose, and from being lost to becoming a man who can lead his own life.

In this episode, we explore

  • Alexander’s journey from addiction and a stroke at 27 to founding The Unmasked Man
  • Why men build false identities around success, achievement, and external validation
  • How suppressed emotions can contribute to addiction, avoidance, and destructive patterns
  • Learning to work with anger rather than suppressing it or acting it out
  • The King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover archetypes
  • Why men’s circles, brotherhood, and ongoing accountability are so transformative
  • Moving from the need to prove yourself toward a life of purpose and service
  • How injury, suffering, and fatherhood challenge our ideas of masculinity
