In Episode 4 we meet Joy Spence, a chemist with a decorated career in the spirits industry most notably with Appleton Estate – the world-famous Jamaican rum brand. In 1997, Joy Spence became the world’s first ever female master blender and went on to receive multiple global accolades for her work. In 2005 Jamaica awarded Joy the Order of Distinction in the class of officer for her services to the spirits industry and now the Appleton Estate Rum Experience tour bears her name.

In this episode we meet Dr. Kadamawe Knife, Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Thinking and Practice at Mona School of Business and Management at University of the West Indies. Dr. Knife grew up in Arnett Gardens in Kingston and attended St. George’s College Kingston before going on to study Economics at UWI. He holds a PhD in Sustainable Development a subject which he felt more accurately reflected his Rastafarian beliefs over more traditional neoclassical teaching framework. These are his views.

Aged 16, at her own insistence, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend boarding school. She later studied Systems Engineering at University of Pennsylvania, interned at John Deere in Illinois and achieved an MBA at University of Chicago before working at Exxon Mobil in Texas. Despite her travels and experience in the US, her goal always remained to return to Jamaica and build a successful career at home. This is her story.
