From 1 July 2026, the AARTO system came into effect in 62 municipalities across South Africa, marking a major step in government's efforts to improve road safety and strengthen the enforcement of traffic laws. While the demerit points system will only be implemented in 2027, motorists are already being urged to familiarise themselves with the new administrative process for traffic infringements, fines and their rights under AARTO.
