Headlines: First woman appointed to AFP Commissioner role

For the first time, the next Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) will be a woman. 

An investigation into Queensland’s forensic services lab has identified widespread issues, finding the state’s DNA testing is at a "point of critical failure."

More than 140 migrants are believed to have died after a boat capsized near Yemen. 

And today’s good news: Australian Meg Harris has won gold in the women’s 50m freestyle at the swimming world championships in Singapore.
