'I think the whole thing is sad': Gallen reacts to Cherry-Evans' Manly exit

Mark Levy, Josh Morris, Paul Gallen and The Big Marn have been left shocked with the news of Manly Captain Daly Cherry Evans deciding to leave the club at season's end, suggesting it could have been handled better from both parties.

Obviously the major story of the week has centred around Daly Cherry-Evans, the manly captain telling the club that he'll be moving on at the end of the year. The question is now where will the Queenslander end up in 12 months time now? I really like Cherry-Evans but I found myself questioning the timing of all of this. It also raises the common complaint from you, the supporters. Why are we talking about it when the focus should be on their decent start to the season? But the headlines revolve around where the skipper is going to be in 12 months time. It's obviously an unwanted distraction and a played out in the media is ridiculous. Cherry-Evans is being painted as someone who's bigger than the club, and the Sea Eagles look like they've mismanaged the whole situation, and I was only thinking driving into work this morning about Tom Trbojevic has offered to take that pay cut. Was it last year the fullback was prepared to do it because of his ongoing injury problems. Yet now we've got Cherry-Evans walking out on the place after 14 years. So how do you feel about the whole saga folks? Because it's going to drag on and on and on. Good afternoon to you.

It's been an interesting week hasn't it. A bit different with Cherry Evans, I take it from what you just said then you're a bit anti what he's done. Um, I'm.

Just anti the whole thing.

I don't have a problem with him doing what he's done, but he's had 15 years there and he's given his guts to them.

I'm. I'm what.

I'm off contract. Well I think he's entitled to do what he wants to do.

What I'm what I'm not happy about is firstly the timing of it. I think for it to play out in the media like it has with the manly officials ringing journalist to then offer a two year extension. I just think the whole thing stinks and for it to be played out publicly, I mean, Cherry Evans has got to take some responsibility for that because at the end of the day, he's the one that makes the decision or when the focus should be on on Manning. I don't begrudge anyone going and sorting out their future, but it's just the nature of the game we're in at the moment, and it'll be interesting to hear what Andrew Abdo's got to say about it, because we'll put to him a question about transfer periods and transfer windows and everything else. I just think for manly fans, the whole thing stinks.

I think Anthony Seibold as well. He's coming on shortly so he'll be able to discuss it with him. I actually think Cherry Evans handled it all right. I don't I don't have a problem with what he's done, mate. He's been there for a long time. He's clearly a bit got his nose out of joint that the offer wasn't what he wanted, but. But I don't think he's gone out and bagged them. I think he's just said, look, respectfully I'm not going to accept the offer. And he's he's going to move on. So he might retire. Who knows what he's going to do? I don't know what he's going to do. I know everyone here has got probably an opinion on it. I don't know what Gail thinks. I don't know what Jay Moss thinks. I don't I don't know what he's going to do. He could well retire. He might go to the Bulldogs. He might go to the Roosters. He might go to Brisbane. Who knows? But what I do know is I think he's I think he's given manly the best 15 years or whatever of his rugby league career. And I think he's entitled, if he's off contract to do what he wants to do.

Let's not forget though. I mean, if you go back to when he did the deal with manly, he back flipped on the Gold Coast Titans. Manly threw the kitchen sink at him. And if you talk to players that were at manly at the time, they aren't too big a fans of Daly Cherry-Evans because they were forced to take a pay cut to keep him. So I mean, I'll put that on the record, but having said that, he's been a wonderful ambassador for the club and they love him on the northern beaches. He's the captain of the club and he's obviously a big part of their success. Josh Morris, You obviously played alongside Daly Cherry-Evans. As I say, good afternoon to you. What do you make of the whole thing?

Yeah I played alongside him. I was on uh 2011 Kangaroos tour with him, so I spent a lot of time with him. Then, um, you know, he's been, uh, a fantastic player. He's done everything, uh, Captain Queensland to a couple of, um, series wins. He's won a competition with manly. He's now their most capped player. I think he can do whatever he likes. And I think the fans should let him do whatever he likes. There shouldn't be any bad blood or any animosity. If he said that he didn't want the deal in December, and then he's come out publicly the other day and said no. And then they've just all of a sudden knee jerk reaction, called up a journalist live and tried to bully him into signing a deal to save face. I don't think that's the right way to go about it. Um, I don't know where he will end up, I said last night, I think he might end up at the Dolphins because he grew up in Mackay and he might want to go back to closer to family, but, um, he might want to stay in Sydney. He's got kids. I think one of them is starting high school next year and he might not want to, you know, move. So, um, but I think Daly has earned the right to do whatever he wants to do, and that club should respect his decision.

Alright. Paul. Gallen's here, gal. Afternoon.

Good afternoon, everybody. Uh, good to be here. Look, I I'm sort of with with you all. I just think there comes a time in a player's career when you've had a ten year contract at $1.2 million a year. I think there comes a time where you've got to put the club first. I mean, he's lucky enough he won a premiership very early on. I think his first year in first grade, he won a premiership. So he's very, very lucky there since then. To be fair, they haven't looked like winning the premiership. Um, for me, I think it's sad. I think the whole thing is sad. I hate seeing a guy who's been at a club for 14 or 15 years leave a club. I think he should finish his career there. I can't believe this is happening. I thought last Monday night was a real bit of a failure from both parties. To be honest, I honest, although both parties are just trying to get their their message out there first to try and save face, I thought that's what that's what it felt like to me. He was trying to get his message out as quick as he could. Then obviously the club's message came out through Fox. I thought it was a an attempt by both of them to try and save face. I do think it's sad that he's leaving the club. I do think it's all about money. I do think he's already done a deal at another club. I've got no doubt about that. Um, I think it's a Sydney Roosters, to be honest. That's just that's just me having a having an opinion on it. But, um, I can't imagine he's not going to play again. I cannot imagine he's gone. He's a great player. He's playing very, very well. Uh, he's only missed 20 games in 15 years through injury. So he's very resilient. He's very, very resilient. Uh, he's still one of the best halfbacks in the competition. But as I said, I can only speak about my own past and my own history.

The thing is, you get old very quickly, don't you?

Would you.

Would like I remember.

I was never I was.

Never for the Newcastle.

Offer. No, I didn't because it's public. Like I got offered the biggest contract of my career at in 2000. I won Dally M lock look there in 2017 got the biggest offer of my career to go to Newcastle. They obviously lacked leadership up there and they need some help. The biggest of my career was to go there and I stayed at Cronulla for about a quarter of the price because I didn't want to leave the club. Now look, I've got a reputation for love me money and I do. I'm never going to deny that or doubt that. But I had opportunities to leave the club for a whole lot more money, and I never did. And I feel I just feel sad that Daly Cherry-Evans is going to leave that club. I just don't think he should.

I agree. I must admit, I find it hard to believe you stayed at Cronulla for a quarter of the money. You got a quarter.

To I stayed.

What did you get offered elsewhere?

800,000. I got offered 3 million. I got off at 800,000 to go to.

So you're saying for 200,000?

For 200.

Wow.

You're a man of honour.

I am. Wow. You know, I actually, I wonder.

I wonder, I was tight with me. He was playing his captain.

That you guys actually know that you guys. You guys know. I know, you know, I know you take the Mickey out of me about cash, but the the. I didn't want to leave the club. I said this. That's not about Daly. I'm just giving my own opinion on it. I feel sad and sorry for Daly. That he's leaving that club. And I feel sorry for Manley. I don't think it should happen, but. But it's going to. And you and both of you are 100% correct. It's life. If he wants to leave, he can leave. He's well within his rights to do whatever he wants. I'm not having a go at him about that. I just think it's sad.

I agree. I think I said last week that he won't be leaving Manley. I mean, I don't even know when it came up. Obviously it was before all this stuff sort of, you know, got to the pointy end of the discussions, but I just couldn't see him leaving. Manley been there for, whatever, 15 years. I mean, I just thought, well, you don't want to taint your career just for money, but I honestly, I can't work out what he's going to do. I'm telling you, I wouldn't be surprised if he gives it away. But you're saying it's all about money? I don't know. I don't know.

The reason I think it's about money is because I think the club often made him an offer. Over a year ago, he said no to it because he obviously thought felt he was lowballed he then he then reportedly asked for a release. Manley obviously said no. Then apparently a few months ago Manley said, look, if you get an offer by another club, we will match it. No offers came through, so they give him an offer of reportedly between 650 and 750. He obviously wasn't happy with that, particularly after Dylan Brown had signed a $1.3 million deal. I think he wants decent money.

Can I can I just throw something in the mix here? And it's something we've been talking about forever. I really feel sorry for supporters of the game. I understand that it's a business and you know, they've got to earn big money. But is it time for us just to pull the trigger and come up with a new system that the fact that we're talking about this, about where a player will be in 12 months time, considering we're in round four of the competition this year. We saw it with Ben Hunt when he went from Brisbane to the Dragons. We've seen it with other players. Now we're talking about it with Daly Cherry-Evans. Do we need to look at transfer windows?

Well, I don't know about a transfer window, but the rule used to be when I was coming through June 30th, you weren't allowed to negotiate with other clubs before June 30th. Now all of a sudden on the 1st of July, three players have signed another club. Everybody knows the manager's in the background of working and wheeling and dealing, which is fine, but at least not in round two, 3 or 4. You've got players and the fans. Not everyone knows publicly that players have gone to another club, so I think they should be back to June 30th. deadline? Yes.

Is all of this stuff destabilising for a club?

Absolutely.

Because players are turning up and they're being bombarded with questions not about their start to the season, but about where Daly Cherry-Evans is going to be next year.

I know what you're about to say and I think it can work both ways. That galvanised the team and makes them want to win because he's going to leave. But I just think it's a distraction players don't need. Whenever you go to a to a to a media conference and you've got all the journos asking who's going to replace DC, what do you think DC is going to do? It's just a distraction that other players don't need. And even if it only takes away from your performance one 2%, that's all you need in this competition. It's that close. That's my opinion.

Hold on. You're saying you want the June 30th, the June 30th deadline brought back in, but you also said in the same breath, four players signed on the 1st of July. Managers do. Please. Are you telling me they weren't negotiating prior to June?

Said they were 100%, but they're not allowed to sign.

Until.

They know about it. The fans don't know about it.

There is no perfect system.

There's none. But at least the fans don't know about it. That's my point.

But they know, I mean.

Well, no, they don't know because.

The press will. The press will say stuff they know. The press knows what's going on. What's going on?

What's. What's the answer, Darrell?

How do you think there is an answer? But I don't think there's an answer.

Do you think it's better doing that than round 3 or 4? All of a sudden we know someone's gone to another club the entire year we're talking about.

I hate it, I hate the way it is at the moment, but I cannot see an answer. How are you going to fix it?

There's no there is no perfect system, but.

You just have to leave it as it is.

Well, I'm saying bring back the June 30th deadline. That's what I'll do. So that way the fans have aren't putting up with it for the.

For the June 30th deadline. Worked whenever we played, didn't it? There weren't players going at the start of the season, so maybe they do need to go back to it.

I just hope from a manly supporters point of view that they don't stand on the hill at Brookvale and give Daly Cherry-Evans grief over all of this. I think the whole but the whole thing's a mess, right? And there'll be an element of manly fans. It'll be dirty on the whole thing. But I think you've got to realise what Daly Cherry-Evans has done for that club over 14 years.

I couldn't agree with you more, but I'll bet anything there'll be blokes burning tomorrow. That's that's the Aussie way.

It's just the nature of the game.
