The Trump administration is considering ending South Africa’s preferential, duty-free access to the American market from January 2027, citing concerns around trade barriers, corruption and national security. South Africa has been the largest beneficiary of the programme over the past 25 years. Losing these benefits would not stop South African goods from entering the US, but it could make exports more expensive and put local businesses under pressure.
