The Big Note Episode #139 - Squawkestra's 20th Anniversary & more!

For Episode #138 on the 27th May I play a lot of music to exercise to, along with explaining how music facilitates the whole exercising experience. The reason for all this sweaty tunes stuff is that members of my family are doing the Push Up Challenge this year after losing a beloved family member to mental health issues.
The Push-Up Challenge is Australia's largest mental health and fitness event. Each year, hundreds of thousands of Australians take up the challenge to complete a set number of push-ups that represent the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in the most recent year of available data. We educate participants with daily mental health facts, and participants have the opportunity to fundraise for one of our chosen mental health charities.

The Big Note Episode #138 - Push It!

On the 137th Big Note we talk about just a few (as there as soooo many) pushers at the edge of the envelope of music & composition. Great eclectic music is played to accompany this discussion along the way.
Harry Partch, Ben Johnson, Allois Hába, Ezra Sims and composers like them were dissatisfied with the established harmonic structures (or we could say strictures) of the modern western musical establishment. They definitely weren’t the only ones however and in reality were simply traveling along a similar path all artistic expression has gone time immemorial. That is one of looking to push the edges of the established envelope of whatever field they were in. In some cases they may not necessarily have been exploring the future, because some aspects of the aforementioned envelope edges pushing had roots deep in the past, as traditional instruments & tuning from many cultures bears witness to.
