On Morning Air, John Morales highlighted a ministry that brings the light of Christ into a place many would rather forget: abortion clinics. For the last five years, pro-life leader Abby Johnson says religious sisters have been hand-writing Christmas cards and sending them directly to abortion clinic workers.
Before she was Catholic, Johnson remembered the day a Franciscan nun, Sister Marie Bernadette, stood in 100-degree weather outside the clinic where Johnson worked. She watched as an abortion patient drove away, and she saw the sister fell to her knees and began weeping. That witness, she explained, revealed a kind of sorrow she didn’t recognize in herself. It stayed with her as she would later write about the encounter in her book Unplanned.
Always looking for ways to do more in the pro-life movement, convents have begun writing Christmas cards, placing them before the Blessed Sacrament, and praying over them before they are mailed. Johnson said Christmas is often when abortion workers start reconsidering their jobs. When a card arrives from a sister, it can feel like “that St. Paul moment,” a sign from God that He has something else in store.
Each card features the Holy Family, a reminder that every person is valuable, and that Christ is the answer. Johnson’s closing promise was simple: “Healing is always available.” She pointed anybody looking for more information to AbortionWorker.com.
