Lorna Mae Devera, the youngest of six daughters, was born in Oakland, California, and raised in Hayward by her parents, Leonardo and Felipa (Naparota) Devera, emigrants from the Visayan Islands, Philippines.

After graduating from high school in 1991 at just 17 years old, she broke from cultural expectations and moved to San Diego to pursue college. While there, she continued forging her own path and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1993 through the Sea Air Mariner program as an undesignated Seaman Recruit. Her service not only funded her education but also provided opportunities to travel extensively.

During her two decades in the Navy Reserve, Lorna Mae was commissioned as a Public Affairs Officer in 2008 and served in a range of challenging and austere environments, including Lomé, Togo; Freetown, Sierra Leone; and both Helmand Province and Mazar-e Sharif in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (2011–2012).

She retired in 2018 as a Lieutenant after 24 years of honorable service. She then transitioned to the private sector, working at Lockheed Martin before being recruited by Perspecta (now Peraton), where she supported U.S. government in the information technology and services space. She continues to contribute to the field of information technology and digital modernization as a government contractor with a leading federal services firm.

A proud lifetime member of American Legion Post 20, Lorna Mae remains a dedicated and vocal advocate for inclusiveness.

An international speaker, she shares the devastating aftermath of her first husband's suicide after a deployment and the disappearance of her oldest son due to mental illness.

Cortney Cino—founder of Whimspire Books and author of the children's book Finally Home— is an author, healthcare marketer, and mom to three girls who inspire nearly everything she writes.
Cino launched Whimspire Books in the fall of 2023 with a simple but meaningful mission: to create picture books that foster imagination and fuel confidence. The name “Whimspire” is a blend of whimsical and inspiring—two elements that are foundational to everything they create. 

Before entering publishing, Cino spent over 15 years in marketing for the healthcare industry, where she helped promote diagnostic tests and medications. Marketing might sound very different from writing for children, but Cino says the two worlds have a lot in common: "In healthcare, you're often charged with making complex science clear and compelling—sometimes on just a single page. With picture books, you have about 600 words to tell a complete and emotionally resonant story. The book’s cover and blurb serve much the same function as a product’s headline and key messages: capture attention, deliver value, and be memorable."

"Another thing these worlds have in common," says Cino, "is that they make me feel like I’m working on something important. Whether I’m helping explain something that can improve a person’s health or writing a story that inspires a child, both feel meaningful."
