Feel the Power of Infrasound: Exploring the World of Sounds Below 20Hz

To the untrained ear, the elusive world of infrasound can be easy to miss. Its the ultra-deep notes that many believe we as humans cannot register with our ears, but it exists in the rumble of thunder and in the communication of elephants and whales. Horror films have been using this sonic range for decades but what if we were to use it to bridge the gap between animals and humans? what if we were to change the way that music can be experienced... 

Composer and technologist Franco Schoeman, uses a combination of traditional music and infrasound to create a performance unlike any other. In addition to the enjoyment of regular listeners, the show holds potential for hearing-impaired audiences to feel the music. According to Schoeman,  "The body is a wonderful, sensitive membrane that can feel these musical vibrations. We celebrate sound, bass, and the marvels of existing on this remarkably symphonic planet."

Beyond Silence will take place at Fairtree Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria on 8 September, hosted by and in support of Whispers Speech and Hearing Centre.

This space is an ecosystem that develops skills and a network for people looking to get into music, podcasting, digital, socials, gaming, and more. The problem is, the space is under threat, as a key stakeholder has had to pull out. AMPD has two months to save itself and is calling for assistance. It is able to offer a unique market and wants to continue to create with dynamic brands.

South Africa is known worldwide as a climbing destination with locations such as Waterval Boven, Cederberg, Magaliesberg and Drakensberg boasting some of the best places to climb, globally. In addition to outdoor climbing there is an increase of indoor climbing venues. It was at one of these venues (CityRock Randburg) that I met up with the Gauteng Youth climbing team that are going to be representing South Africa at the 2025 IFSC Youth World Championships in Helsinki. 

If you have ever been interested in this high altitude, adrenaline pumping sport - we get the perfect breakdown of each element of this competitive world from the young athletes themselves.

As the luxury travel and hospitality industry grows, many upscale hotels and resorts in South Africa are incorporating saunas into their wellness offerings - But beyond this people are even installing sauna rooms into their own houses!

For this reason Matt Flax went through to Camelot spa in Melrose arch to meet with the team from The Sauna and Steam Guy, who installed the bespoke Himalayan salt rock sauna. It gets up to 90 degrees Celsius, this one is coming in hot!
