Saving Goals to Saving Souls: A Pro Athlete's Collapse, a 10-Year Recovery, and the World Cup

We keep debating whether pastors should use AI. Meanwhile the machine moved into the nursery — and while we argued about the pulpit, kids started going to an AI before they come to us.

In this episode, Keith Koo makes the case that the AI conversation has been aimed at the wrong room. Only about 12% of pastors feel equipped to teach on it — but the real front line is the kitchen table, where roughly 3 in 4 teens now use AI companions, and kids increasingly turn to a chatbot before a parent for homework, health, even personal problems. Scripture put formation squarely on parents — Deuteronomy 6, Psalm 127, the faith Timothy received from his grandmother and mother — and it always assumed presence. Drawing on his own childhood with a stay-at-home mom and three decades in tech, Keith argues the point isn't fear; it's stewardship. His college-age daughter uses AI to augment her work; other kids deliberately avoid it to stay sharp — and both can be healthy, because the goal was never "use it or don't," but a formed posture and the discernment to choose.

The second half turns to what a machine can't do. It's engineered to be agreeable — it will never give a child the loving "no," and it can't model repentance, marriage, prayer, or keeping your word when it costs you. From the Gutenberg press (once feared, then a tool for enormous good) to a personal story about an AI that invented a "Dr. Keith Koo" who never existed, Keith lands on a grace-filled charge: you can't be your child's firewall, but you can be their first picture of the Father. Who is Raising Your Kids? AI, Formation, and the Parent's Job

Last week Keith Koo described a church building with no room in it for a twenty-four-year-old who comes home from college — a youth group he's aged out of, a young marrieds class he doesn't qualify for, a men's group where every man is a father. This week he answers the question that episode deliberately left open: what would have had to exist in that building for him to stay?

Not a warmer greeting. Not better worship music. Not somebody noticing him in the lobby. Something nobody had built yet.

Speaking as someone who spent three decades inside organizations rather than from a pulpit, Keith names the structure — a flywheel of marriage, children, children's ministry and giving, efficient, compounding, and entirely unbroken, with one door that opens at marriage. Then he sets the guardrail the rest of the episode depends on: this doesn't ask you to change your theology or your stance. It asks you to change your model of engagement.

Five recommendations follow. Real content, not just community — because a group whose only product is friendship loses people the moment friendships change. Help with vocation and career, which most churches have ceded entirely. Ministry outside the four walls, with Paul the tentmaker as the warrant. Dating and marriage handled honestly, without building a room whose only exit is marriage. And the three conversations nobody's having: money and debt, loneliness in adulthood, and artificial intelligence and the shape of work.

He comes home at twenty-four, walks back into the church he grew up in, and stands in the lobby with a cup of coffee looking at a board of groups and meetings. There's a youth group he's aged out of. A young marrieds class he doesn't qualify for. A mothers' group. A men's breakfast where every man has children. He stays a while longer, then stops attending — and nobody follows up.

Keith Koo opens this episode by telling you that man was him, and that it's the reason Ten Talents exists.
