Remembering Magazine Barracks: The heartbeat of Durban’s Indian community

View descriptionShare

The Magazine Barracks in Durban occupy a significant place in the social, political, and cultural history of South Africa’s Indian-origin community. Established in the late 19th century, the barracks was initially built as hostel-style accommodation for Indian labourers - primarily municipal workers employed by the Durban Corporation. While the physical conditions were harsh and overcrowded, the Magazine Barracks became a place where a resilient and vibrant community took shape, laying foundations that would influence generations of South Africans of Indian descent. We reflect on this historic area with members of the Magazine Barracks Remembrance Committee.
