IEB Excellence: Reddam House Ballito's Samishka Govender scoops 7 distinctions

For more than four decades, Subry Govender used journalism not merely as a profession, but as a weapon against injustice. He worked during some of the darkest years of apartheid South Africa - the 1970s, the 1980s and the early 1990s - when telling the truth came at a heavy personal cost. He was detained, harassed, banned,and placed under house arrestby the apartheid state - not for committing crimes, but for doing his job. We go in conversation with the veteran struggle journalist, former SABC journalist, and author of the powerful memoir 'Coolie Journalist'.

Another impressive story belongs to Moses Xaba from Reddam House Umhlanga, who joined the school in Grade 10 from the Drakensberg and made a remarkable academic turnaround while immersing himself in school life. A choir tour to Carnegie Hall in 2024, participation in rugby and soccer, and lead roles in productions culminated at the end of 2024 with the launch of his first music single at the school’s valediction.

Achieving a staggering 91% for Visual Arts – the highest in the grade - and earning a place in the school’s Top 20 students, Aathika’s work transcends the classroom. With an overall average of 81% and four distinctions (Visual Arts, History, Life Orientation, and Afrikaans), she has proven that academic excellence and deep emotional intelligence go hand-in-hand.
