Over the course of just three short days from the 22nd to the 24th of August 2026, news coming out from South Korea's popular tourist destination Jeju Island shocked the world when it was revealed that 4 bodies had been discovered. Needless to say, word quickly spread online, with many speculating that there had been some kind of mass murder or tragic accident on the island.

 

However, further reports would paint an entirely different story from what many had imagined. And in fact, the crux of the matter was actually a lot more familiar and disappointing than anyone had initially imagined.

How far would you go in the name of scientific discovery?

 

During World War II, deep within Japanese-occupied Manchuria, a secret military research facility became the site of some of history's most horrifying human experiments; an operation infamously known as Unit 731. At its helm was Dr. Shiro Ishii, a brilliant but ruthless military microbiologist who spearheaded Japan's biological warfare programme. Alongside his successor, Dr. Masaji Kitano, and a team of doctors and researchers, Ishii oversaw a system where prisoners were deliberately infected with deadly diseases, subjected to brutal experiments, and dissected in the pursuit of scientific knowledge and more effective weapons.

 

But perhaps even more disturbing than the experiments themselves was what happened to the scientists responsible. Because even after operating some of the most inhumane experiments, some of the researchers actually managed to walk away with immunity, their research deemed too valuable to lose.

The Scientists Who Turned Humans Into Lab Rats | S19E5

In 1991, 17-year-old Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro began suffering from terrifying visions and unexplained seizures after an encounter with a Ouija board at her school. Months later, she died under mysterious circumstances.

But for her family, Estefanía's death was really only the beginning.

Inside their apartment in Vallecas, Madrid, strange phenomena began escalating. Doors opened on their own. Shadows moved through the rooms. And infamously, a photograph of Estefanía appeared to burn on its own, while it was still in its frame. Eventually, it got to a point where the family couldn't take it anymore, and called the police.

What the officers allegedly witnessed inside would become part of an official police report, earning the Vallecas Case a reputation as Spain's first paranormal incident supposedly documented by law enforcement.

But was this really a haunting? Or has decades of retelling transformed a family's tragedy into something far more supernatural than the evidence suggests?
