The New Zealand driver struggled across the three days at the season-opener in Melbourne, and crashed out after rain arrived in the final stages of the race itself.

The Chinese event is under way in Shanghai, Lawson's been asked what the feedback's been Red Bull team boss Christian Horner and adviser Helmut Marko.

Lawson finished 18th in first practice, but only two places behind his champion teammate Max Verstappen.

Three Formula one All the Flavor without a Doubt Man name that. Christian Horner was speaking of the talents and the operational ability of his newest driver, the Kiwi Liam Lawson.

Tough weekend for Liam?

What did you say to him afterwards?

I think you've just got to pick yourself up and focus on the positives. I mean, he had the second fastest race lap and yeah, you know, it's just a very difficult weekend. So it sort of turn the page, keep your head down, don't look on social media, and you know, focus on the on the next race. He's you know, we believe that he's got, you know, the ability. He just needs a bit of time.

Number one rule, don't look at social media.

I often describe it as the worst job in all of motor sport to be Maxi Stappling's teammate in a Red Bull. Can anybody handle that that you would want in the team or would it be two Bulls in the same case.

It's a tough it's a tough seat. I mean, you know, obviously there's been a few drivers he's been with a team nearly ten years now, so you know Daniel Ricardo was a strong teammate for him during the earlier years. You know, Checko did a good job twenty one to twenty three, was second in the World Championship, in the Driver's Championship in twenty twenty three. And you know we've we've got a policy of backing youth and backing young talent, and you know that's why we're giving Liam that opportunity.

It's Christian Horner. They backed the talent and the youth. But if they don't perform within six races there in the sea, I don't think this all happen this time around. They can't afford to twenty nine for one. Now in the cricket ciphered eighteen off seven, Chapman teen off five till no further score. In the football one zip on No do they just score again? Just as I said that, I think they did. I think Staminick might have actually scored or is the I or just eye on that. But in the meantime, let's talk a bit more Formula one racing from the man that founded the TRS, the Title Racing Series which is now known as the CT Frock the Castro Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship. His name is Barry Tomlinson and indeed there was a score. It's now too nilmly Zeland over Fiji after seventeen minutes. His name is Barry tomlins talks now about what he's seen in Liam Lawson. Good evening, Barry.

Hi, good evening, Darcy. Great to talk to you.

And great to have you on board. What another massive weekend for young Liam Lawson and of course Lim who's had a wonderful start. And we can't avoid this. You are the founder of the Toyota Racing Series which is now ct Frock. This is a series that has catapulted so many young drivers, not just New Zealanders, but young drivers into the wonderful wilde world of Formula one. You must back, Barry and look at the grid and look at the names and go wow, they cut their teeth in New Zealand through a series that I helped found. Must be chugely satisfying for you.

Yeah, very much so, Darcy.

And you know, my wife Louise and I and along with Toyota, you know we can we can be very proud of you know, what we achieved setting that series up back and oh for and you know the year now you look around the world actually and motors sports, and you know obviously Formula One, Orlando Norris was here with his Lance Stroll, both Champions and Tars and you know Liam and Brendan Hartley, all these guys, you know they've Yeah, we saw them when they were young here in New Zealand, and yes, we are very very proud to be able to sit back and watch them around the world and in sports car racing and all sorts of things.

That's it's quite incredible. Really.

I think it needs to be kind of celebrated and constantly because the nature of that series, it's so quick what five can kind of weekends, and the overseas units love it because it's then they're off season and they get the feeling of the intensity of race after race after race after race. It's really hard to replicate and it sets them up well and word gets out and a lot of the young pedals want to get over here and compete.

Yes, absolutely, Duarcie, and you know it is an incredibly intense environment when they come and you know, it took us a long time to establish them and we started the series and four and you know I used to walk the paddocks of Europe and at times in America, and it was a really hard sell to get the thing up and running. And you know, I used to spend all sorts of hours hanging around the paddocks waiting for opportunities to talk to drivers, to talk to team to driver managers. And you know, for a long time, we were we were we weren't well looked upon, to be honest, because in those days, you know, teams and managers they like to sort of keep the driver under control and keep the money and their control role.

And so you know, it was a real, real grind to start.

But I guess we started to make you know, real traction in about twenty ten after a lot of work.

And I must think, you know, Brendan Hartley a lot.

I spent a lot of time with Brendan when he was young racing in Europe and junior series, and gave me the opportunity to get into paddocks that possibly it would have been difficult to get into. So another key we drivers too along the way, and yeah, so it really took off and then to see you know, the sort of caliber of drivers that we ended up having in New Zealand, and then also not only that Darcy, but the teams, the engineers, the young key engineers that have gone around the world now and the mechanics and all that sort of stuff. It's pretty incredible really and you know very much, you know, you know, world class championship and it remains so, you know, to this day.

You mentioned Brendan Hartley of course gone on to fantastic thing, that World Endurance Championships a number of when Lamart a few times as well, and of course he was our last driver in Formula One until Liam Lawson turned up. And I'd suggest that it would make you very very proud of himself along with Marcus Armstrong going toe to toe going through F three through F two. Obviously IndyCar for Marcus Armstrong. But then Liam gets the nod and I interview him years ago when he first got picked up by Red Bull just before his first drive in Toyota Racing. At that stage, did you suspect there was something special about this kid?

Yeah, look like a lot of these kids that came along to be honest, I mean, we you know, I knew of Liam when he was in.

Go karts, you know, I'd heard his name.

But of course, you know, then they show up on the you know, in the paddock, and you know they often show up when they're thirteen years old running form the forward and you know, and you kind of get to kind of see these these young fellas and you know, in the odd and of course you know a few girls along the way too, of course. And yeah, no, you know, I guess the cream always floats to the top, Darcy, and you know, for sure, you know, people like you know, Nick Cass, Didy, Brendan Hartley, Mitch Evans, all these guys, you know, they were able to show their talent against you know, world class talent coming into the country. And and then of course Liam having the opportunity to jump into form into tr S in those days, and you know, along with Marcus Armstrong and you know famously you know, was signed from by Red Bull out of the toyter Racing Series, as was actually Brendan Hartley way back in the days. I mean Red Bull discovered Brendan and t r S and then signed him to the junior program.

So yeah, pretty amazing.

And now to watch Liam make the step in the Formula One and it's been a difficult one for him, and you know, I guess we.

We'll talk a bit about that too.

Tough start, But I think under the circumstances he did very well. I'd never raced in Albert Park in Melbourne, Ford didn't know the place. It was wet, He had no time at the start because his car broke, so he didn't get any time to circulate. I think that if anything could have gone wrong, it did. How do you feel that he presented after that? He got that fastest lap. It was on slecks and ended up in the scenery, but he showed it naugh, didn't he that he is going to be worthy of the seat?

Yes?

So I mean if we sort of go back to the you know, to last year and getting into the VCARB team, I mean, you know, unfortunately he missed the opportunity to get in at the start.

Of the series.

You know, famously, Daniel Ricardo kind of took that seat, and so that Liam missed the opportunity to run in Melbourne, you know, last season, and then obviously had kind of a half season when they dropped Daniel and put Liam in there, and you know, and then for you know Liam to make the step into Red Bull Racing and arrive at Melbourne. You know, the circuit is a very difficult circuit. It's a very flat circuit. It's a it's part street, part permanent, a lot of white line, there are a lot of bike lane lines and all sorts of things over the circuit. And then yes, unfortunately in practice, you know, he was getting up to speed in a car in a circuit that he didn't really know, and then of course got to the very important f P three on Saturday morning in the car unfortunately I had a problem and he completed no lapse and you know f P three is the most important.

Session really of the weekend leading into.

Qualifying, and of course, you know, then got into the car and qualifying, didn't know what he had under him, and unfortunately, you know, probably he would admit that he kind of overdrove it a little bit, made a couple of mistakes, but you know, those things happened when you didn't know what he had under him, and so you know, it was a really difficult start to the weekend for him, and you know, and then that led into the race, which was obviously wet.

We did well enough, everything went wrong. So now he puts that behind him and moves into Shanghai. Now he's not raced there before either, but this is a purpose built race track. This is something that he's more familiar with, and the way the car is set up. It's all about Max verst Stappen. But what we've seen back in his early years and maybe in TRS was his willingness to drive the wheels of it. He is a very aggressive driver by his own right. So even though that's a hard setup to drive for stap and a car, if anyone can actually wrestle that thing, it's probably Liam, isn't it.

Yes, And I think you know, you know, if we think about Max, I mean Max is in his tenth season in Formula One, you know, so here's Liam getting in.

You know it really is a rookie.

I mean, okay, he's had a couple of opportunities last year, but in.

The end, he's a rookie.

He's a rookie in a red racing car getting in against a full time world champion who's done ten seasons. And then you know there's a lot of noise about Simoda or you know why he didn't get the ride.

Well, Simoda. Of course he's he's entering his fifth season, you know, so yeah, Liam, Liam, did you know?

It was a tough weekend in Aussie But I think, you know, heading into China, you know, okay, he's never been to the circuit before, but it's a permanent circuit, much more familiar. And yes, you know, I think the car, it's well recognized, the cars of a.

Difficult car to drive.

And I think, you know, Max is a guy that's he manages to adapt, and I think if there's somebody else that can adapt.

I really believe that Liam can.

He showed that ability, has been in and out of championships around the world. He's always been quick, you know, so there's no reason why he will not find the speed in the car. And you know, with a little bit more time and a good clean weekend.

You know, a lot of people ask me how long is the piece of string between when they decide we're going to drop kicking like they have done with every other number two driver in Red Bull. I'd suggest it's quite long for Limb because I think they've got to stop this kind of behavior and they've got to develop the next tier. I don't know how long Max is going to be around for They've given him some pretty harsh steps, like point three of a second to follow Max around, but I think they're going to give him a lot longer to settle this time around, and I think he'll settle quicker than they think. Is that a fair statement, Barry?

Yeah, so, yes, there's very much so Dars, you know, he yeah, you know, there's a lot talked about the point three off Max. Well, you know, that actually is quite a standard kind of clause and a formal one contractors that you must be within two or three tenths of your teammate, very standard kind of thing, so that's not unusual.

And you know from there, you know, you know, yeah, he will.

Definitely be able to find that pace in the car and yeah, yeah, so yeah, it's going to be an interesting weekend to watch. It's a tough one, isn't it for the sprint you know race, But again that's a good thing because you know, in the end there will be a few sprint races through the year for Liam and it's great that he gets that very early on, that experience one practice session into a sprint qualifier and then into the sprint race.

You know, so that it's good. It'll be a good weekend for him this weekend, I'm sure you know.

And how long do you think he's got How long before Red Bull gets short? Do you think I'm right in that when they've got to give him longer this time, they're running out of options. They can't keep treating their drivers like that.

Yes, So, yeah, that was the other point to your question, which I actually lost, Sorry Darcy, but you're to come back to that point. So, look, you know that in the media they're saying three to five races and all this kind of carry on, But as you've pointed out, Darcy, there's a damn strong chance that Max is going to walk at some point. Red Bull absolutely have to you know, actually develop some talent. And you know they haven't taken Limb into that seat for five races. You know, they've looked at the guy last year, They've had him in the sim multiple times.

You know, they know what they have.

They would not have put him in that seat if they didn't believe that Liam Lawson can develop into a world class, potential world champion.

You know.

So I think, you know, forget the three to five racists, forget that's just.

All media height.

Zach Brown at McLaren, he's going on saying, you know that the Liam's you know, the skids of under Lamb. Well, you know, Zach is just the master of creating a situation.

Yeah, you're just always trying to put.

Pressure on other teams by all these kind of you know, all this kind of talk.

He was into Horner last year, wasn't he and all that stuff.

So I think let's let's ignore all that rubbish and media in New Zealand.

Let's ignore it and let's actually sort of start to really get in behind Limb and really give him some home support.

You know, that's that's the key, and stop all the social media rubbish that goes on, and you know, let's all be positive for him.

I think that's a real key point here, Dusk.

I talked to his old man Jared last week about this, and you've been home, settling in you know, where he belongs, where he's comfortable, I said, Jared, can he clean his room yet? And mean, nothing's changed. So it's nice to see you still just a down home kid, hey Berry, Thanks very much for joining us. A real pleasure. Enjoy your weekend, in fact, enjoy the entire year. This is so so much fun.

I look forward to talking to you again.
