Joseph Pearce on Hilaire Belloc’s “The End of the Road”

View descriptionShare

On the Son Rise Morning Show, Matt Swaim welcomes Catholic literary scholar Joseph Pearce to discuss Hilaire Belloc’s delightful poem “The End of the Road.” Belloc wrote the poem after making an extraordinary walking pilgrimage from France to Rome, traveling across the Alps and through Italy to arrive in time for the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

Pearce explains how Belloc’s energetic list of verbs—from marching and stumbling to limping, creeping, and sauntering—captures both the physical reality of pilgrimage and the spiritual journey of the Christian life. Just as Belloc eventually reached Rome, Christians are called to persevere through every stage of life toward our ultimate destination: heaven.

Pearce also reflects on why poetry can communicate truth in a unique way and how Belloc's pilgrimage provides a powerful image of the Christian journey—sometimes energetic, sometimes exhausting, but always moving forward by the grace of God.
