How does the classical epic of Aeneas challenge modern men to reject self-indulgence, overcome destructive distractions, and embrace their God-given mission? On The Son Rise Morning Show, host Matt Swaim welcomes back literary scholar and author Joseph Pearce to discuss Virgil's Aeneid from his book, Great Books for Good Men.

Pearce contrasts the journey of Odysseus with that of Aeneas, a Trojan refugee called by the gods to found the new city of Rome. He analyzes the famous tragedy of Book 4, where Aeneas becomes entangled in a passionate affair with Queen Dido of Carthage—a distraction that causes both leaders to abandon their duties to their people. Pearce explains how Aeneas's difficult choice to walk away from lust and embrace his duty serves as a timeless lesson for men today, offering a powerful blueprint for rejecting the modern traps of technological and sensual distraction to pursue authentic virtue and holiness. When Jesus asked whose image was stamped on the census coin, what deeper truth was He revealing about our civic obligations, our spiritual identity, and the sovereignty of God? On The Son Rise Morning Show, host Matt Swaim welcomes Fr. Jonathan Duncan, pastor and chaplain in the Diocese of Charleston, to preview the Mass readings for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Fr. Duncan breaks down the political trap set by the Pharisees and Herodians regarding Roman taxation. He explains how Christ’s response—"Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God"—exposes the limitations of earthly power. While coins bear the image of Caesar, human beings are stamped with the image and likeness of God. Drawing from St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians, Fr. Duncan emphasizes that while we owe proper civic obedience to civil authorities, our entire lives, hearts, and worship belong to Jesus Christ, the true Lord of all creation. Stream now to listen!

How should society evaluate the basic human right to food and water for the medically vulnerable, and why does the Church categorize nutrition and hydration as ordinary care rather than optional medical treatment? On The Son Rise Morning Show, host Matt Swaim welcomes back Bobby Schindler, President of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network, to discuss media coverage of high-profile legal cases and the ongoing advocacy needed for brain-injured and medically fragile patients.

Schindler reflects on his late sister Terri Schiavo's legacy and contrasts the constitutional protections and due process afforded in criminal cases with the civil legal disputes facing innocent, vulnerable patients whose feeding tubes are withdrawn or denied. He breaks down the Catholic Church's teaching on artificial nutrition and hydration as basic, obligatory care—not medical treatment—and highlights the urgent need for public awareness and legislative protection for patients with traumatic brain injuries or limited responsiveness.
