Show & Tell Ep. 156: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Ronnie Marmo, Cerqua Rivera and the Bea Hive Bash

One of Chicago’s favorite sons' Gary Cole is back in Chicago for the first time on stage here in 25 years - at the Steppenwolf - in the wildly acclaimed “Catch As Catch Can”. Gary talks to Andrea about the dual role he plays on stage at the iconic Steppenwolf under the direction of his friend Amy Morton (star of Chicago PD)!  Gary also discusses the roles for which he gets most recognized, revisiting Wrigleyville and hitting a few Cubs games, and what he loves most about this city! This year, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off celebrates 40 years of playing hooky and touring the streets of Chicago. Dan Goldrosen has created the “Life Moves Pretty Fast” walking tour on the day Ferris, Sloan and Cameron took their world famous “ditch day” on June 11th.  You’ll tour the famous sites they saw including the Art Institute, the Flamingo, and the iconic parade site along Dearborn.  There will be hot dogs, a little twisting and shouting, and you’ll even see where the valets took that Ferarri on a little joyride.  Tickets and information: onlocationtours.com

 

Nova Linea Musica has just concluded its 3rd season and musicians from all over the world came to Chicago to celebate!  Andrea talks to 2-time Grammy nominated guitar phenom Mak Grjic about his journey from martial arts to becoming a world renowned classical guitarist. Intonation Music is celebrating its 20th year in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood by providing young people with musical instruments and instruction. Students can play any instrument, from guitars and bass to drums.  Students form a band and perform together and even learn singing and songwriting techniques. Founder and instructor Tonya Howell talks with Andrea about the success of this south side musical institution that has turned students into rock stars.  Information: Intonationmusic.org

 

Finally, we meet two of the winners from Broadway In Chicago’s 15th annual Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards (IHSMTA), celebrating excellence in high school theatre across the state.  Logan Arroyo from Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort won Best Actor for his portrayal of Will Bloom in BIG FISH: SCHOOL EDITION and Jane Nuich from Maine South High School in Park Ridge won Best Actress for her portrayal of Eurydice in HADESTOWN: TEEN EDITION. They will represent the state of Illinois on an all-expense paid trip to New York City to participate in The Jimmy Awards. Jane and Logan talk to Andrea about what it  means to know your passion so early in life, what it means to go to NYC and make their Broadway debut, and how they envision theatre being part of their lives in the future.

First up, Andrea talks to two of the stars of one of the biggest plays in Chicago right now – Covenant at the Goodman Theatre.  Debo Balogun and Ashli Rene Funches join Andrea to talk about their pivotal roles in this groundbreaking performance that’s getting rave reviews – and its run was just extended through June 7th.  Debo and Ashli Rene both talk about their ties to Chicago, as well as the emotional storyline in this supernatural thriller playing at the iconic Goodman Theatre.  Tickets: Goodmantheatre.org.

 

Next, the Tony- Award-winning musical comedy SPAMALOT is back in Chicago at the CIBC Theatre!  Andrea talks to actor Leo Roberts, who plays Sir Dennis Galahad, The Black Knight, and Prince Herbert’s Father in the show.
