Youth career advice usually sounds like a plan. Tony Chapman's version starts earlier and goes somewhere different. His mom rented him the pitcher for his lemonade stand, made him calculate profit margins on Kool-Aid concentrate, figure out how many cups per glass, and walk to the park where it was sunny before she'd let him sell a thing. That's not a lemonade stand story. That's a first lesson in how you can impact outcome.

The helicopter parent makes the lemonade, designs the sign, and emails the neighbors to stop by. Then they show up to sit in the lobby at their kid's job interview. Chapman hired a lot of young people and said directly: if a parent came in to sit in the lobby, that candidate didn't stand a chance. The thing parents think is support is producing the exact result they're trying to prevent. Meanwhile, a kid alone on a farm road outside Ottawa selling sunflowers in the heat, no parents, negotiating price on the spot, is already running laps on the version being raised in the lobby.

The oxygen of life is curiosity. Know why you're there and you'll know when you can leave. Love is when time disappears. Three things worth writing down.

Career college in Canada has a number most people haven't heard and it's worth stopping on. 71% of graduates go directly into a field related to their training. The average student is in their 30s, has children, and is making a deliberate choice to retrain, not falling back on something. One to five o'clock every day is what they have. Career colleges are built around that window. Universities and community colleges generally are not.

A massage therapist trained in Alberta wanted to move to BC. The only pathway the system offered: go to Newfoundland, get recertified, then qualify for BC from there. A personal support worker doing the same job in a care home in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and BC can't just move between provinces and keep working. Canada needs welders, electricians, dental hygienists, and healthcare workers. The regulatory structure governing who can work where is actively slowing that down, and Michael Sangster appeared in parliament last week to say so directly.

The first person in a family to graduate from post-secondary education, walking across a stage into a logistics career at a company like Amazon or Canada Post, with ten family members watching, changes the trajectory of that family. That outcome is happening inside career colleges right now at a rate most Canadians don't know about.

Two days after Milan Cortina ended, the Canadian Olympic Committee called for more money. Jamie Ellerton's read: cheap and lazy. The last serious investment was Vancouver 2010 and Own the Podium. Everything since has been drift without a documented gap analysis or a sport-by-sport strategy to show for it.

Lindsay Broadhead's counter is structural. Investing at the elite level is one of the few places where trickle-down economics actually works. Women's hockey is the case study: fund it properly, market it properly, and you change what the sport looks like a generation down the track. Kids without extracurriculars, without access, without funded sport in schools show a direct correlation between money in and the kind of humans and communities that come out. The Olympic Committee wants a blank check. What Jamie wants is a 20-year plan with the gaps named.

Trump's State of the Union ran for an hour and forty minutes, brought up eggs again, and the markets moved on before it ended. The communicators watching it weren't tracking the content. They were tracking the format.
